Amen. My Uncle was there in the Navy on one of the smaller ships. He has since passed away. What a story he had! I was there in Honolulu last December on this day. Visited the Arizona. If anyone has the chance you should go there. May God rest their souls and may we never forget.

I was fortunate enough to visit the Arizona when I was 17 while in a high school honor band.

Even at that young age of unawareness I was moved to fighting tears. The reverence there can be cut with a knife.

God Bless and may we NEVER FORGET all who have served and sacrificed ! Did anyone else notice that the liberal mainstream media did not even mention that it was Pearl Harbor Day in the beginning of the news cast? It used to be at the top, today I never even saw it on the morning news.

My dad was a Japanese translator from 44 to 46 in the Pacific and was in Tokyo until discharged.

When we grew up he would rattle off some Japanese and we would laugh and he would tell a humorous story about being on ships etc.

Later, a few years before he passed when he was 83 , we were having breakfast at my house.

He stopped , and stated," Did I ever tell you I was in Nagasaki 10 days after the bomb?"

I let him talk as he was obviously thinking back.
He was in a search force in the 2nd Marines.
Said they were sent in to search for primitive cruise missiles that the Japanese had positioned in caves on the coast.

He said that everything was gone in the city, all burned. He walked up to a train, all the wood from boxcars etc was gone. He said he saw that the wheels of the train were WELDED to the rails from the heat of the bomb.
It was apparent he was still coming to grips with the humanity of it all, he was born in 1920 and grew up with ice boxes and steam locomotives

God bless all of them AND their wives , the GREATEST GENERATION

This was a cousin on my wife side, 18 years old, having the terrible misfortune of reporting to his first Marine assignment on December 6th.

Private Leo D. Amundson was the newest member of the Marine detachment aboard the battleship USS Arizona. He reported for duty on 6 December 1941, and was pending assignment to specific duties. When his ship came under attack early the next morning, Amundson had no idea where to go or what to do.

PFC Lamar Crawford spotted Amundson “sitting on a bench just inside the Marines’ area.”

He was very frightened and confused. I stopped and talked with him until general quarters sounded. I told him to "sit down right there and stay until this is over." I crossed through the compartment to the starboard side, up the ladder to the boat deck, then mounted the tripod ladder for the eighty-foot exposed climb to my battle station in the secondary control booth.

Amundson was never seen alive again. At 0813 hours, a Japanese bomber scored a hit on Arizona’s forward magazine. The battleship exploded and rapidly settled to the bottom of the harbor, taking 1,177 Marines and sailors with her.

Burial Information or Disposition

Amundson’s remains were not recovered or identified after the attack. In accordance with Navy tradition, he is considered lost at sea with the Arizona as his final resting place.

My Dad was there. At NAS Kaneohe Bay. Survived the war and lived to be 94.
