I have a No 1 in 45-70 s/n 130-12XXX with the early checkering pattern. From what I can tell it was made in '74. Just wondering if anyone knows when Ruger started producing No 1's in 45-70? Also when did they change the checkering pattern? I've had other No 1's in different calibers that had it and at one time knew some guys on other forums that would know but I've lost track of them.

I checked some web pics of Liberty model #1s and they show both stypes of checkering.
Dunno if any stocks replaced or not.
Same for '77 models Ive searched pics of.

My '74 had same pattern as my '67, some call em "swoop" checkering.
I forget what my '78 had but think it was of newer pattern.

I had a mid 80's 7x57 that had the newer pattern but for some reason thought the switch was made in the early 70's. I may call Ruger on the start of 45-70 production question.

I bought my first No 1 in '74....a 45-70.

I was a stupid kid and sold it to buy some other new shiny thing.

Oh, to have that old red pad back!! How many lawns did I mow to buy that (I paid mid-$200 range for it, new).

The first 1S's in 45/70 were made in May of 1970. In 1968, there were at least 2 different prototypes made. One was a Beavertail forearm model; just like the later 1S, but no barrel band. Also a 24' C weight barrel was made; serial #5. Being like a 1H in 375 H&H.

Your pics show the 2nd checkering pattern. The 1970 rifles had the Mershon round edge pad and 1st checkering pattern.

Someone got a pretty good deal on a 134 series, on GB this morning. Really nice wood on it.
