I bet the first 2 or 3 pilots taking off on that had sphincters so tight you couldn't drive a 16 penny nail with a sledge hammer With cabled masts and other obstructions center deck? Something seems odd other than purely transport. Osky HF Communication antennas that were stowed for flight operations. Same thing with modern carriers. They have several antennas that are hinged and are laid down facing outboard over the side when the ship at at flight quarters. Now they are along the sides of the ship and not down the centerline but they are still there.
