Have a buddy that shot a doe last week with his Rem. 700. This past weekend, he gets in his latter stand and can't open the bolt to load his rifle. WTH? What can be done to prevent this from happening again?

The j-lock and bolt shroud are easily replaced, about a $90 job

My model 700 223 had the J lock. I replaced the bolt shroud / firing pin with one from gre tan rifles. With the m700 bolt disassembly tool, it was an easy swap

Easy do it yourself job, no trip to gunsmith needed.

Were it me, first thing I would do is replace the bolt shroud to get rid of that lawyerized 700 or a lever gun "safety" mess. Brownells sells kits to R&R those things.

A great reason to buy used, without those "we are saving you" pieces and pats.

I have a bolt disassembly tool, and was thinking to just replace the shroud. Just wanted some input before I get my hands on it. Thanks, I will check Brownells.

If you replace the whole shroud/firing pin assembly you get rid of the wonky bunched up spring that comes in the j lock rifles.

Is that a GreTan fluted assembly? Other than the fluting does it differ from the GreTan lite steel assembly?

Yes,Gre-tan fluted which is an all steel fluted pin.The lite pin assembly is an aluminum pin with a steel tip I understand.

What problem does the "wonky" spring cause?

I changed my BIL's 700 Classic 300 Sav with a Gre-tan.The original spring had flat spot's from rubbing the inside of the bolt.Might have been trouble down the road.

For some reason probably only known to some bean counters the springs on the j lock bolts were too long. They bunch up and can drag against the inside of the bolt body. I replaced mine before I found out if it could actually be a problem.
