The 358 is a nuts and bolts, no frills cartridge for sure.Equal to its metric brethern.Too bad it didn't sell. I'll probably be stuck in the 270 Win./ 284 Win. rut for the rest of my days.I should take my other rifles for a walk more often.

Not bad place to be, overall.

Given that it'll take just a hair over 100 mph to add 150 fps...don't think I want to be in the bakkie or the F250 if someone is trying to add meaningful velocity increments... grin.

An interesting cartridge, but as anyone familiar with aviation knows, anything with a designation containing an "x" is experimental. You'll have a hard time convincing Americans to try an experimental cartridge developed in some 3rd world country where they don't even speak English. wink

F250 seems a bit light for nilgai, unless maybe it is on a downhill slope.

Meanwhile, congrats on the purchase, you righthanded bas...fellows get all the good stuff.

I've known LOTS of Americans that use it to kill non-Americans, and it weren't developed in a 3rd world country. Guess I missed the 'marketable' in you previous post..........

No freakin' doubt, but they have such a great opportunity......

Even Beretta would screw it up if they had it.

Like their shotguns, however. Beretta, that is.

Griz,

You mentioned Beretta...

I once saw a $6,800.00 Beretta O/U DR in 9,3X74R that came in new with a very impressive test target. There was just one problem. One barrel was short chambered and never had the finish reamer treatment. Go figure...?? whistle Everything else was finished nicely.

Mule Deer,
Bansner doesn't list a stock for a Short Action MKII/Hawkeye. Maybe you can convince them to make one. If they do I will order one tomorrow( and probably 3-4 more over the next year)

+1
In reply to my email about a month ago, they said they don't make a stock for either size Mkll. Sure wish they did.

Who knows? It probably won't be used on Montana bears, at least this spring, as we'll be leaving for Africa about the time they really start coming out of their dens. But there are an awful lot of other places in Montana (and elsewhere) where a light .358 isn't a bad idea!

Partly I bought it because my other .358 is an heirloom, a Savage 99F inherited from Norm Strung. It is not really made for nasty weather, and will never be risked on an airplane flight. Plus, as somebody already noted, the .358 will probably not remain long in the Hawkeye lineup, so this rifle will soon be something of a collector's item.

And it was too good a deal to pass up!

Ok,this has convinced me to pick up a SS/synthetic in 358.

Great,another rifle I don't need......(grin)

Those Ruger Hawkeye's look good. A shop here has one just as you describe it in .358 and it feels and handles well. It might be a tiny bit lighter for me as I am now looking that way rifle weight wise.

I use a 99f .358 and in fact have two of them. Lets not argue what nasty weather is like but mine are in good shape after a lot of use since 1966. Besides the 99 has a hammer. Much more reliable than a sticky firing pin for really severe weather! wink

99,

I have hunted in really nasty weather with 99's, but mostly don't want to damage this one any further than Norm did! It does get hunted, though....
