Will have a savage 110 in 284 soon. It was a 30-06. The gunsmith installing the 284 barrel is going to cut the chamber slightly longer. Should be able to load to a 3 inch oal. Will be trying to get the ABLRs to a 2800 MV. Any suggestions on a powder?

RL-19, H-4831 and Hunter look like good bets. Having a 26" bbl will help.

The barrel will be 24! Based on an effort to get a 160 accubond to 2800 in a 22 in. Savage barrel, I'm thinking 2800 may be difficult for the 168.

I think a progressive burning powder like RL-26 would get you to 2,800. I don't see any data for it and .284 in my manuals, but it works good in the .270 WCF with heavy bullets. Maybe someone here with Quickload could run the simulation.

FWIW, in a 7mm08, RL26 got me to 2800fps with 160sgk. I suspect you’ll be close. That stuff continues to amaze.

When I read your original question RL 26 was my first thought. As I read the comments it was others opinion too. I’m getting 2900 with a 180 gr partition in my 24” 30-06 with 63.5 gr of RL 26 (compressed, work up). Also getting 3070 in a new 26” barrel of my 7mm Rem mag with 66 gr of RL 26 with a 150 gr TTSX. And 65 gr of RL 26 with a 180 gr ELDm in the same gun mid 2900’s. I suspect my new barrel will speed up.
Not 284 data but giving an idea capacity to weight velocity. Good luck. Ken

I'll start hunting for Reloader 26. Not a lot of variety up here in Alaska.

Using a Berger 168 VLD getting 2925 fps with 52 gr of RL-17 fed 210 match primer, 23" barrel. Reamer is a custom with throat angle of 1.5 degrees and setup for VLD to kiss lands with an OAL of 3.050", this setup requires some neck turning for a .315" neck. Your results may vary some.
I am thinking you should easily get more than 2800 with RL-17

That wouldbe great, AZ. Just have to find R17, which may be difficult!

I think you will get close with a few powders H4350, H4831sc, RL26 to name a few. I'm just under 2800 with IMR4955 and a 22" Shilen shooting 165 TGK
