Couldn't buy gas on Sundays. Couldn't buy a whole lot back then on Sundays due to the Texas blue laws. The blame for that rested on the Baptist representatives in the legislature. Since Carter is a Baptist, he's guilty by association.

Hurry Jimmy, the angels are waiting. 1977 to '81 were the longest years of my life...as a mechanic to the timber industry, with a new family...the absolute destruction of the housing market and western lumber market, crazy interest rates, gas lines odd and even days depending on your license plate number, high unemployment...a terrible time. Translating gas costs then to now....imagine 1 gallon of regular costing 1 hours labor. The MSM claim Carter served one term because of the Iran hostage crisis....NO, hell no, it was because in 4 short years he destroyed the middle class economy. Between Johnson, Carter and Clinton, I've pretty much had my fill of southern politicians.

Had the misfortune to meet him once when I was "expected" to attend an event at the WH (only because my work was nearby and they needed attendees) - he/they were celebrating the founding of the US Dept. of Ed. and introducing the first Sec. of Ed. (Hufstedler). When time to shake hands with him/her I firmly said he had made a huge mistake and the nation's education would only suffer from that action, and long regret that he started the USDE.
Carter's jaw dropped, Hufstedler asked who I was, and the always nearby minions gently but firmly forwarded me along the line. During the coffee/cookie time, neither of them came over to chat - but some other agreeable folks did.
