I just bought a 1958 EG that appears to be factory drilled for a scope. I have a period correct Leupold Varix X II 2 X 7 X 33 that I want to use.

My question is what are the best mounts and rings to keep the scope as low as possible without removing the rear buckhorn sight while still keeping it period correct.

From what I've found it looks like Weaver makes a set fitted for the 99's and look easy enough to install.

For a 33 MM objective what height would y'all recommend and would you agree Weaver steel is a good choice?

Thanks in advance

Weavers are a good choice. You can get the 33mm in the low mounts. Your scope should be short enough to not interfere with the buckhorn sight.

Leupold also makes a one piece base that works well.

I've got the 1 piece Leupold on my only scoped 99. I went with it for the gross windage adjustment, since my action is tapped really crooked. I like it, but even with low rings it puts the scope pretty high over the action.

Arty has some? Leopold? This is a gun from Jed Pereau's collection. I purchased it from a dealer in Tomahawk Wisconsin

Get the Weaver 14 and 19 bases and Quad Lock rings and you're all set. Don't look any further. Best price and cleanest installation going.

According to Stroebel, the Leupold Vari-X II in 2-7 was not introduced until 1966, so you will have to decide if you consider that "period correct" for a 1958 rifle.

I disagree with 99Guy. I held a Vari-X II 2-7 next to my 99F with a straight tube scope on it in low rings, and I don't believe the bell of the Vari-X II scope will clear the barrel sight. My limited experience is that most guys prefer to mount scopes on 99s as low as possible. I do. Assuming you plan to shoot it, I would replace the rear sight with a blank and use low rings. You may need an extension ring, at least on the front, to get proper eye relief. Save the rear sight so you can replace it if you decide to remove the scope in the future.

There must be guys on this forum who can relate actual experience with a Vari-X II 2-7 on their Model 99s.

I went and looked at the 2-7 on my pre war EG. Plenty of room. The 2-7 may have had different tube lengths pending year of manufacture and model?

Thanks 99guy. I felt like the 2x7 would be the best choice.

I do consider 1966 close enough to period correct Jaaaaack. It's near impossible to tell the exact year a Leupold was made except before or after 1974.

I do plan to shoot and hunt with this rifle. I'm a 1964 model myself so it's all period correct for me lol.

Thanks for the advise Lightfoot. I'm thinking that's the route I'm going to take.

I feel like this rifle in .308 has the potential to be extremely accurate and I want to set it up right.

This is the 14 and 19 Weaver bases with Burris Signature Zee rings. They make offset inserts if you run out of windage or elevation. I’ve had to use the offset inserts several time to correct the windage. I don’t know if it’s the bases or the rifles. I have a couple 308’s. They are very accurate.

I try to buy VX III 3.5x10’s for my 99’s. I like gloss scopes on them.

Here is a 2.5-8x VX-lll mounted on the 300 Prewar checkered F that I hunted with tonight. Before anybody has a fit about it being D&T-ed, I bought it that way several years ago. (But it is still cool as hell!). You can see the tube is short enough to clear the back dovetail.

I think the tube lengths on Leupold Scopes has varied over the years. The one 2-7 I have that does not interfere with the front sight may have been the compact version. Too lazy to get out of bed and check right now.

tired

Only way to find out is pretend put your 2-7x scope up to the barrel and mount/ring positions like Jack did.

What was the issue the Weavers had a few years back? I got a set of Weavers a few weeks ago and when I put them on the rear mount was drilled crooked. Looked like it was trying to make a left turn. I put my extra Leupold one piece on the rifle. First time I ever had a problem with Weavers?
