John R Pardo died Dec 5, 2023. He used his wingman's tailhook to push them to Laos to avoid capture.

There were a fair number of pilots in 'Nam faced with dilemmas of the worst kind, and in turn they let their imaginations loose, frightened the Devil away and got it done. Pardo's push illustrates that perfectly!

There are no fighter pilots down in Hell!
There are no fighter pilots down in Hell!
Navigators, bombardiers, and a bunch of other queers,
But there are no fighter pilots down in Hell!

There was also a documented instance of a tanker crew who rescued a crippled and leaking fighter by flying into the North, then latching the refueling boom in place to tow the fighter to a safe area. Balls.

As Dan said, when things got so far "off the charts" lots of guys simply made something up and did it. Innumerable examples from many wars.

My Dad was a career Air Force pilot. Flew both multi engine and fighters in his career spanning 1950 to 1970. I recall some of the stories, but I would do anything to have additional, in depth conversations about the things he did and missions he flew.

He was killed in a car accident about 20 years ago. Another driver was passing in a no passing zone and forced him off the road.

I thought I had more time with him to have those discussions…………

RIP Mr. Pardo. Saturday Night Live wouldn't have been the same without your distinctive voice as its announcer.

RIP Sir. You did a fantastic job. Airplanes can be replaced. Pilots can't be.
