The 85’s had ejection issues which were due to a mechanical blade ejector working at 6 o’clock on the bolt. Mounting scopes high cured it but ejection was redesigned with the sako 90.
I have an 85 Black Bear .30-06 and it ejects at 1:00-1:30 o'clock (not straight up as some have claimed.)
If you have a scope with a big windage knob, it's going to hit. Even a short traditional cap will get dinged at the end using medium Optilock rings. But mine never kicked the shell back into the port. It's been perfectly functional.
I did switch out the medium Optilock clamp-on rings for Optilocks with bases. High rings cures the issue completely. But it puts the scope pretty high up. It's still comfortable for me. It would work very well in a climbing tree-stand where I find a higher mounted scope easier to use.
I've experimented with several scopes on this gun and I'm not really pleased with any of them.
It currently wears a Leupold VX-3HD. But I bought this gun for handiness and I think I'm going to delete the scope altogether and get another Aimpoint Micro H-2 or T-2 and a base and use that. The T-2s work well on my slug guns. I think it would be abouyt perfect on this gun, especially in the thick central Virginia woods I would use it in.
