I had so many firearms.... I knew I couldn't keep my youngins away from them. Couldn't hide the ammo.
Kids will find anything if they want to. So I started teaching them about guns , and the danger of not using them proper. We lived in the woods and my son hunted. He adopted a Steyr Zephyr I had , and a 2 digit SN Colt Ace . He was 6-7 years old.
I encouraged him.

Nice looking Marlin you have there Dirtfarmer. Mine is a straight grip made in 1954 if I remember right, it isn't going anywhere either...

A single shot open sighted 22LR that live at gramps house. I have a vintage Winchester 67, single shot .22. I used it as a kid, shooting rat shot on rats and birds. That would be a good one. May could find a stock to cut down. Good idea. DF

A youth Red Ryder BB gun may be the easiest to make happen and he can shoot that in his back yard in Old Metairie.
His Dad had mentioned a BB gun and he needs to be bought in as I’m too far away for regular shooting.

All my kids learned to use open sites with the red rider BB gun when they were around 6. Knocking down soda cans on the wood pile. From there, they went to the 22lr. I watched them like a hawk. The girls now have a 243 and the boy a 222 rem.

DF, I picked up this Winchester M121 Youth maybe a year ago for my currently 20 month old grandson. It's a single shot with an automatic safety and a 12 1/2" LOP. They were made from 1967 to 1973. I looked at it, they were asking $150 for it, and handed it back. I went mule deer hunting and emailed them to put it in back and I would be there in a week to pick it up. They did and upon picking it up they asked who would be using it. I advised and they dropped the price to $125. Since then a granddaughter has arrived so she will be set as well. Really a pretty nice first rimfire.

My kids both got a Crickett 22 single shot bolt rifle when they were small. They were cheap, accurate, and about as much fun for me as the kids.

I would suggest starting on the Red Dot.
If you won't be there for hours of mentoring then get them on a successful path in the shortest time.

If you are under 18 you don't own a gun, your father does and you get to use it.
Don't get me wrong, I have Christmas pics of me getting a win bolt 22 singleshot when I was 7, but see above Depends on the state you live in!
