Put a Burris 4x Compact on my Ruger 77/357 with a used pair of Ruger low rings. I've got another compact scope for it since the Burris went south last week.

I was worried that I may have gotten the upper ring halves mixed up front to back or side to side. Then I remembered that I had a scope alignment and lapping kit that has never been used. (Duh. Senioritis. The struggle is real.)

If the ring alignment is alright, should I consider some lapping anyway? I planned on using the RingTrue tape regardless.

If the ring alignment is O.K. no need for lapping.

Personal preference as this can be argued all day long. IMO! It takes any guess work out of the equation and eliminates any so called torque marks on the tube and when putting two halves of anything together and even a really nice looking fit I still lightly lap the rings after alignment as it was my gunsmith Father in Laws practice that I learned from and continue. Just works for me. Different strokes.

Your bottom ring halves came off of one line, and your top ring halves came off another line. They met up at the packaging cell. Why would mixing them up make any difference? They were never "matched" to begin with. Lap the bottom halves gently anyway, to prove they are aligned.
