There's a lot of uncharted legal issues going forward, the big one will be the due process issue in the dissent.
One of the cases the Colorado SC did cite in their decision was Hassan v. Colorado which affirmed a states right to exclude a candidate from the ballot, Gorsuch was one of the judges that heard the appeal in 2012.

Yes, that’s correct. As long as President Trump appeals the decision to the Supreme Court, the appeals court stays their own ruling – essentially indefinitely. The Colorado primary ballots printed, and the primary election will be over, before the Supreme Court puts this on their docket.
In addition to the virtual guarantee the high court will overrule this political nonsense, SCOTUS can make the entire issue moot before them by following their own normal schedule for submissions, arguments, deliberation and opinions delivered by the court.
The Colorado appellate court knows this, that’s why they put this self-stay into their 4-3 ruling. It’s a politically correct way of giving the optics of telling their tribe, ‘hey we’re with you,’ without the ramifications of the political backlash. In other words, psychological lawfare stuff – intended for media consumption.
Why would a state think they have the ability to dictate terms of a federal election?
First there are no FEDERAL elections, all elections are basically County, Municipality, City or State Elections.... there are State Elections for 'Federal' Office...
Second there is no US Constitutional provision for a general election to POTUS or VPOTUS.
Third the 'right' to vote in a POTUS election is a State Right. There is NO US Constitutional requirement for any State to hold a Popular Vote election for POTUS.
POTUS and VPOTUS are elected by the States EC Electors...
