In her work as stranding coordinator at the Noyo Center for Marine Science in Mendocino County, Sarah Grimes investigates reports of dead marine mammals up and down the coast. So when she began finding the decapitated bodies of harbor seal pups dragged up near the high-tide line in MacKerricher State Park, just a few miles north of Fort Bragg, she was on the case.

“It was so gruesome,” said Grimes. “I was like marine mammal CSI, seeing all the dead pups with their heads torn off, and I’m like, ‘What the heck did that?’ ”

The headless bodies began turning up in 2016, and Grimes wasn’t able to pin down what was behind them. She suspected it might be coyotes, as she had found tracks in the area — but coyotes were not known to go after live marine mammals.

Oh no. A conundrum for animal rights activists.

Good. Cape cod is lousy with seals, hopefully the coyotes find them. You can hardly catch a striper when the seals are around. Great whites are actively feeding there now as well. Nice one two punch since .gov protects the seals.

If they really feel is it a "wild" predator, I would conclude some species of wild cat. Cats tend to eat the head of prey. Going for the highly nutritious brains etc. I know somewhere...can't remember where but same deal-- They were finding a species of warm water penguins on beaches with no heads. Finally discovered it was a puma. It would catch and only eat the heads. Didn't need to eat whole thing because prey was numerous so just ate nutritious parts.

Been there, 25+ years ago. Doesn't surprise me.

Wish I could read the whole article.

Clicked on it, read down couple of paragrphs, then it asked for a subscription.

it's ok as I get the gist of it and could likely find the kid's paper online.

if there were some condors up there, they'd be cleaning up the dead bodies the 'yotes left..............like they did in the old days

Coyotes are total opportunist. Years back we had an abundance of water and a carp population explosion. Those dogs would wade the shallows and drag 10+ lb carp out of the water. I doubt it was a recreational endeavor. Neighbor has some great pics, but we don't have a copy.

they've been seen on more than one occasion taking spawning endangered suckers in the Colorado River.

Coyotes doing coyote things is all
