I’ve killed a couple of incidental coyotes with a12 GA load of 5s or 6s.

What kind of load for a 28 ga would give best results on coon to Coyote sized critters?

Price won’t matter much as I won’t be shooting many of them

Who makes what in heavier than lead?

Tss would be the way to go if money isn't an issue. I've seen a few guys taking deer with 28s and TSS loads

TSS 3, 4 or 5 for coyotes. Raccoons don't need anything special. A load lead 4, 5 or 6 will do them in.

Have looked a bit online and the largest TSS shot size I've found in a 28 ga is #7

I got no experience and make no claims, but I think I'd like to try some TSS 4s as a contingency load
Probably gonna start loading shotshells, which I've never done. but even that looks expensive with TSS...

But, at the end of the day even a 7/8 oz load of lead 7 1/2s is effective close in. It would be in the nature of a confession if I admitted to some of what I've done with that in a 20 ga

Not sure how serious you wanna get..........

Apex Ammo is pretty highly regarded stuff. They do a thing called "Small Batch Series" where you can (to some degree) have them custom load your shells.

I'd think TSS #6's would be REALLY hard on coyotes.

Yeah, I looked at them when this thread started. I'll get around to calling and see what they'll do

My full and Improved modified chokes are marked "NO Steel". I imagine that applies to TSS, too?

You could/should call the manufacturer and be sure. But I'd think NO Steel" = "No Tungsten" as well.

TSS #2 from a 12 gauge is about as fine a predator hunting load as can be concocted. I have shot coyotes with TSS #2,#3, and #4 and strongly prefer the #2's. In a 20 because of the fewer pellets, I might compromise and use #4.

Talked to Apex yesterday and the largest TSS they offer as a standard load in 28 ga is 7 1/2. They do offer some custom load options in what they call their summer production period, but the guy cautioned me about potentially poor patterns with larger (4 or 5) TSS shot in a 28 ga.

Apex rep told me that he had killed a coyote at 50 yards with a 12 ga load, 1 1/4 oz of 8 1/2 TSS shot

I am tempted to order their 28 ga 7 1/2 load to play with...

I won't say the Apex rep is full of bull, but I wouldn't count on consistently and reliably rolling up coyotes at 50 yards with size #8.5 shot. But then, I'm not selling anything either. One ounce of #7.5 TSS in a concentrated pattern will kill coyotes if the range is moderate and the angle of the coyote is favorable. In other words, if everything is right.

Pretty much agree...

I've seen coyotes killed with a 2 3/4 20 ga load of 7 1/2 lead shot, but it was about 20 yards with a headshot on an unaware coyote...

FWIW, I patterned my new beretta 28 ga yesterday at 30 yards on a 16x17" sheet of paper. Federal "Top Gun" load 2 1/2 dr - 3/4oz - 7 1/2 lead shot

2 shots ea on a fresh paper with IC and Mod tubes installed

If the Mod tube shot any tighter, you'd have to actually count pellet holes to tell it. And both tubes had some curious holes, maybe 2" or so across, in their patterns

One load, small sample, and less than scientific conditions, but there you have it

The IC tube had the better overall pattern

Johnw,
Your trying to make a 28 ga. do something it's not designed to do with ammo that's not designed for fur baring critters whats the point? Rio7

I'm going to be carrying a 28 for birds more often than not, and I will see coyotes while doing so.

Good question, and I'd been thinking of it.

If I keep a shell in the chest pocket on my coat I can have a different load in the top barrel in about 5 seconds, letting the one that was in the barrel hit the ground
Tried it 2wice this afternoon

Most likely thing would be to see a coyote moving my way and simply change loads and ambush it. I have had them pop out of brush at close range, but more often see them moving and can set up

If a coyote pops out at 20 yards he's getting the oz of 6s in the gun.

Today, I was shooting at an old paint bucket. My tighter choke will usually be on top, so I'd quick change my top barrel load, and then close the gun and fire both loads, not trying to flip the safety to shoot top barrel first.
