When it comes to calibers used in hunting.I could probably confine this to just a deer rifle but would pertain to any game hunted. The debate years ago was the Elmer Keith type versus people like O'Connor, Page, etc.

Personally I have never shot a deer with a sub 30 cal gun and my current favorite is a 338-06, so I guess I would be in the Keith school of thought.

I know these debates were before the true era of "premium" bullets and though I try to use the sub 30 cals I keep going back to the high end.

So what school are you?

Larger caliber, moderate velocity or smaller caliber higher velocity

I'm definitely of the larger caliber school of thought, with the 7-08 being the exception, as I love it .....

Definitely .30 caliber and above for me as well. Of course, there are exceptions but the few sub-.30 caliber chamberings I like are, for the most part, all weirdo European metrics.

If it don't push a .338 size bullet it's a loaner. Excepting the 45-70 used for special situations.

Have no want,need,nor desire for anything over 30cal.Or much for the 30s either

Drill the shoulders with a good bullet and critter dies.

.243 to .358, and anything interesting in-between! BT

got no use for anything over a 30-06, But I prefer the smaller calibers

I use a lot of 6, 6.5, and 7mm small cased cartridges for general purpose hunting which is most of what I do. Of course, I would be negligent if I didn't admit that the 30-06, 340, and 45-70 didn't also see a bunch of time in the field with me. Spme of each every year. The ordinary "go-tos" end up being smaller though.

I have suitable rifles from 250 Savage to 300 Wby. and 338 Win. with several stops in between. I suppose if I loaded the Barnes TSX my 22-250 would work too. My main rifle is a 308.

My main deer rifle is a .358, but then that's hunting blacktails. It would probably be different if I could hunt mulies. Elk is a .338 or .325.

Fast, smallbore, and light doesn't have much interest to me, except perhaps the 120-gn TSX in my 7mm-08... that sounds kind of interesting.

I always always try to pick the appropriate cartridge (which varies greatly for each person) for whatever I'm huntin' and then tend to lean a bit toward the "heavy for" in the bullet department.

270,7mm,and 30 cal for me; if anything heavier is needed(not often), I use a 375H&H. The 270 Win and 7 Mags see the most use.

I started out with .270, 7mm and 30 calibres, but in recent years I've used bigger stuff like the .358 Norma Mag and .375 H & H Magnums.

A shoulder injury has the 7mm Rem Mag out of the safe again, and I have been thinking of a 6.5 x 55 Swede now too. It seems that shoulders don't heal very fast.

All these calibres work if you stick the bullet in the right place, but I do like the lack of meat damage of the .375 H &H and they way you can take a shot at any angle and still penetrate through the heart & lungs.

I am philosophically a "Keithian" and consider the.338-06 a good small deer rifle. The .375 H&H is the best all-round rifle ever developed.

On the other hand, my goto rifle is a .257 Roberts (but I use heavy for cartridge 115 and 117 gr. bullets) and I have been known to hunt (and kill) deer with the .22 Hornet.
