Is this a common loonie-ness that I have developed? It began simple enough by rationalizing that if I take a back-up gun hunting it would simplify things if they were the same caliber. Now I have a pair of 223s, 243s, 25-06s, 7x57s and an extreme itch for another 6.5x55 and/or another 280. Oh, and let's not forget the lonely 260, and I just found a good deal on another 223WSSM....

Help! Tell me this is common and not to worry! crazy

I once had a Ruger No.1, Ruger 77RSI and a Remington 700 Varmint all in .308. I still have the No.1 plus a Steyr Scout. I also had a pair of Model 70 .375s. Oh yeah, I currently have two rifles in .257 Roberts, and let's not even talk about .22 rimfires.

Don't worry, be happy!

This is very uncommon.. It seems that you have pairs of smaller calibers, but you don't say that you have a pair of 30-06's, 7mm's, 300WM's, or a pair of 338's or 375's... My advice would be to go directly to your gun store and pick up at least a pair of 7mm's, 300,'s or 338's. Probably 1 pair of each. With a pair of the bigger calibers, your collection would be more rounded out and "MIGHT" bring you out of rifle loonie-ness. Your a loonie for not having twins in the larger calibers, I mean really, who would do that!!

Ha!! jetjockey, you make a fine argument. I currently have only one 7 mag and recently sold a 300. Bad old shoulder can't handle the recoil anymore and these little Texas deer don't require the big boys.

RJ you are a comfort. I have a way to go yet it seems. Thanks.

Ky,

Oh man, I didn't even think of the rimfires! Now I'm starting to worry again.

I'm rich in .270's, have 4 of them. Although 3 are sako 75's they all have different handles. The other is a pre 64- 70 fwt....now who shouldn't have atleast one of them! Color me loonie I guess.

They are not duplicates unless they are exactly the same. Different barrel lengths, stocks, barrel thickness, all count for being different. Guess that is why I have four in 30/06, four in 308, three in 223, three in 7/08. Until recently had a 300WSM, 300WM and two 300Rums. Less not consider pistols.Rick.

Seven: If you like a rifle/caliber combo,it works for you, and you have confidence in it, it makes lots of sense to have a backup or spare in the same caliber,or at least something roughly similar that performs the same function, trajectory, level of power, whatever.

Rifles have been known to go "bad" or require fixing for many wonderful reasons at inopportune times, so it does make sense to have a "backup". And having a backup in the same caliber makes more sense than having a bunch of different calibers that really do the same thing.Nothing irrational about your behavior... smile

Nothing wrong with being a loonie! Just noticed I had six 30's when I started reloading for them! The three mags (WM,H&H, WBY) and three '06s. Have no idea why! blush Then looked in the rack and saw the 280. Gotta luv em all! Gave away two 270's to daughters just to save face!

You find yourself in with a highly esteemed class of loonies. Welcome.

Almost any reason at all will rationalize another gun. I always avoided the .270's. Nothing at all wrong with the round but I had 30-06's etc.

Then a buddy was selling a nice old, circa 1949, FN Sporter for $400. Yes it had a nice scope and mounts too. Have you ever seen a 1949 FN Sporter? As you can guess its a .270. Shoots good too.

30.06 rich here, three to be exact, one going in the classifieds this week. If it makes you feel good, d'aint nothing wrong with a little duplication - in moderation, of course. grin

You are not alone.

Only twins I have are a pair of .280 AIs, but I do have five .270s. If you count the rifles that I have given to the daughters and grandkids, you could throw in four 7mm-08s...

Guess I've been going at it all wrong. Thought you had to pick a different CHAMBERING to rationalize a new buy. That got me up to 18; not counting some half dozen rimfires. It's a whole new day, now that I know the rules.

I have two twin 7mm-08s that shoot the exact same handload exactly the same, only difference is one wears a 3-10 scope and the other a 1.5-6 scope. Different optics for different conditions,,,,,,,,and my backup gun shoots just like my primary on trips

I don't know which is worse. Pairs of some or one of everything. Life is good.
