She said 5 words and I said them back.
Then she had a number of easy tests, like, "What is the date?" I said, "The day after Christmas.. so must be Dec 26, 2023." She said, "I have been asking that all day, and no one has missed it yet." I laughed. Then she wanted me to remember those 5 words from 5 minutes ago. I could only remember 3. My wife, sitting there, asked the doctor for a referral for a more extensive test to baseline my mental decline. And she got one:(

"The day after Christmas.. so must be Dec 26, 2023." : good abstraction . she evaluated you based on answer.

Short term memory decline is a common thing, it happens with age and with many neurological disorders. I can remember things people said to me in the first grade of school back in 1965 but go to get something out of one of the drawers in the bathroom and can't remember what it was while digging in a drawer. Dangit what was it I came in here after?

Another cognitive test the docs give is to ask the patient to count backwards from 100 by 7s. A lot of people who are having cognitive problems stumble on that one.
FWIW.

humans think and talk in 3's the good , the bad , the ugly life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness the son, the father, and the holy ghost we are taught to develop 3 key points in a presentation because humans block out after 3, and 2 pieces of information isn't enough to convince our logical brains

How is knowing todays date any indication of a good memory?
I don't gaf what the date is anymore.
I also use a calendar on my stupid azzed smart phone like most everyone I know.
My father answered those questions with "I don't care" until they asked something he cared about.
Nurse asked him who was the president. He answered "that GD niqqer". Not sure if that helped his situation any....she was black. He then went on to tell her the difference between being black and a niqqer. Not sure that helped any either.

If the doc had nice t*ts you could blame her for less than ideal answers.

L.W. The hard way I'd have to do math in my head. Could do it faster on paper, even faster with a calculator. The easy way is "7", another 7", another 7".

Yep, that's a hard test. Designed to test transference from short to long term memory. That's why they interrupt you with non-sense question, then ask those five words again. Any you then missed failed to make it from short to long term memory. As you deteriorate, transference from short to long term memory becomes impaired.
