Not a rifle, but I did get a nice long action featherweight stock to upgrade my recently purchased 270 Win Model 70 Ranger. Thanks Santa!

Think about 2006 was my last Model 70 acquisition. Age related, into eighties, time to hold pending my own 'still kickin', time to fold! Happily I'm still good for appreciating a good 70 related war stories", tech discussion or BS IF politely wrapped. Just maybe to see more "centerfolds" as using the available pix space available! Well dang it. Not a model 70, but I just bought a nice little sporter 52. Made in Japan. Is that even considered a Winchester? Couldn’t say no, at 7 hundy

My father in law got himself a 1983 Model 70 Carbine in 270 Win about two days before Christmas. Came with the original box of ammo purchased with the rifle, containing 15 pieces of brass and five unfired rounds. Got it from a family friend who wanted him to have it. Leupold gloss 3-9 Vari-X11c to match. Both felt like they screwed each other at $600.

Leupold gloss 3-9 Vari-X11c to match. Both felt like they screwed each other at $600. Sounds nice and a very good deal. Now, who got screwed, we'll never know. Selling to friends and family is hard to do. My girlfriends dad was hinting around about wanting a nice older Winchester model 70 270 winchester, and I asked her when he was born. She said 1950. I was thinking the closest thing I have is 1953 in a std wt 270 Winchester. Half tempted to just give him the rifle (if he did the background check). She said NO, as he never shoots his rifles. "He'd never use it", according to her. Well, I guess that settles that then. I think as long as both parties are happy, it doesn't matter the price.

I bought myself a 1952 M70 in 270 for Christmas, it's in rough shape, not abused but very used. 50% of the stock finish was gone, had several spots on the barrel the bluing had rubbed through. Ancient Pachmayer pad , hard as a rock, sooo I stripped the stock, refinished with Tru Oil, re-cut the checkering, Red deccelerator pad, touched up the barrel bluing and glass bedded it. Not done yet, will post pic's when completed.

Some that have been messed with like that, need it, and are great candidates for this type of treatment. I like those kind of rifles.

I did. Ha ha. I was thinking about you and your new beautiful rifle. You should share with the crowd. Thanks big buddy BSA, i sent some pics to our old bud Pacecars, maybe he can post them in a bit. Rifle came very near new in it's factory box wrapped in old oil paper, the bolt wear that's on it is from me working the action and holding the rifle for hours on end over several days, bolt face is still like glass, rifle is a 1951, barrel is a '49, Justin over at pre64win said that's plenty correct, plus, box, action and bolt all matching numbers, it's going to be a great fair weather hunting rifle and one that will go on next Safari for all manner of plains game. I have to find Wife all four colors of springbuck and a copper colored Wilbebeest bull, Eland, Sable, Zebra, Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala and Warthog will also be on the menu, i'll use the 175gr Speer Grand Slam bullet at 2675 fps. Thank you too Pal.

Thanks bud, this is going to be a fun one, even the part of milling off, filing, and cold bluing the face of that front scope base to just get the scope back far enough to clear the barrel sight, speaking of that old J Unertl Hawk 4X, Mike out at Ironsight told me he has seals and orings and can purge the scope if it fogs, i really hope it holds up, would love to leave it on the rifle and use it for all hunting.

I didn’t get a rifle but ran across a neat little stock on gunbroker. The seller had two, this one and another in Claro walnut. The Claro sold for 110 I think and I paid 140 for this one. Should have bought both. He had them listed as semi inlets but to my surprise it was about 99% inletted , took me about 10 minutes to fit my rifle to it. I finished it over a the weekend, need to nock down the shine a little and send it out for checkering.

Winchester 52 repro. How it looked when I got it home: Now how it looks with the scope I'm going to be testing its accuracy with later on today: I may eventually put a smaller scope on it, but I wanted to use one of my good trusted and proven scopes on it. This Weaver V16 4-16x42 always works very well. I've been wanting one of these sporters for a long time. It will keep my 1949 heavy barrel target model great company. Now you guys probably see why I couldn't leave that shop without buying the dang thing!!!!!

HS 58 Well thanks! Here are the 2 best targets of the day. 2 different brands of ammo: And then back to the Wolf Match Extra to confirm ammo, zero and rifle: I'm pretty happy with it. A very nice late Christmas present.. I'm glad I did not pass it up at that shop.

Half of my dealing is done. I put a Model 70 Winchester Westerner in 7Rem Mag on layaway for 570.00. I will have to wait till Friday to spring that one and to put a Model 70 Alaskan in 375 HH on deck.

John, No barrel boss BSA, I do like the featherweight with iron sight rifles. Guess that makes me old...... The irons sights just gives them that classic look. I like it too. One of the reasons I jumped on the model 52 I just bought. I also had an iron sight Ranger, that I bought for my wife, back in 1997. I loaded it way down, with 110gr speers and IMR4198 powder. She liked shooting it for a while, but she wasn't really into guns, or hunting. Yours looks slick in that XTR FWT stock.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Any thoughts/ advice on putting iron sights on ones without.
Are they all drilled for peeps?

Shouldn’t be a problem adding iron sights if you want them.
All are drilled for receiver sights

I bought myself a 1952 M70 in 270 for Christmas, it's in rough shape, not abused but very used. 50% of the stock finish was gone, had several spots on the barrel the bluing had rubbed through. Ancient Pachmayer pad , hard as a rock, sooo I stripped the stock, refinished with Tru Oil, re-cut the checkering, Red deccelerator pad, touched up the barrel bluing and glass bedded it. Not done yet, will post pic's when completed. Sounds awesome buddy. I look forward to the pics. Good on you for sprucing that one up, and breathing new life into it. Some that have been messed with like that, need it, and are great candidates for this type of treatment. I like those kind of rifles. Finished product, unfortunately I didn't take a before photo. It was rough though. The purist may hate me but I don't care

Now that's a good looking Reproduction.
Can't wait to see the shooting results.
BSA That's a shooting machine. At what range were those groups fired. They might have been smaller if the benches weren't shaking. What's the story on those benches. Are they made out of 3/4" plate ? Hal

I like it. Looks great. Thanks for posting!! Yea, no hate here. Looks great to me. Thanks guys. I bought this on the campfire classified from Medriver, maybe if Jud see's this and still has the original pic's in his files he will post it? It came with an old Weaker K4 in weaver mounts. I think this was the original "truck gun" . The gun was used and not maintained but it wasn't abused or bubba'd in anyway. It appeared the action had not been removed from the stock in 50+ years, the dirt/pineneedles poured out. The bolt face was perfect and I put my bore scope down the bore expecting 70 yrs of copper and carbon and throat erosion. To my surprise it was pristine. My initial plan was to re-bore to 9.3X62 but I think I will shoot it first. My bet is it will be super accurate and I cannot in good conscious re-bore it. We shall see. The 270 is my favorite and I own 3 pre64's 270's and a custom Mauser in 270, so I don't need another, but need has nothing to do with it, right? As for collectability, I am not a collector, I am a user, this one was definitely not a collector gun and I feel I improved it immensely.

Yeah, those benches are beasts. I like them. They were donated to the range by a welding shop. They are 1" steel plate.

Thanks Gents, i pulled all the old vintage ammo yesterday, simply cant chance a hangfire/detonation etc, brass resized and primed with cci-250's, will begin new load development soon, 175gr grand slams over imr-4350 will get it done.
Damn cool thread, great shooting rimfires, sweet compact, safari express and hell of a spruce up job on that one Fubar!

My pleasure Brother Fubar, great job on that model 70, it'll make you a fine hunting rifle, zeroed the irons on the old rifle with 175 grand slam load for another rifle, put two stacked right on top of each other at 100 so i know it'll like the bullet and powder, yes Sir, i took a little break to do all the Lords work i could over the last year, plus, getting a break from a couple jaw jackers here ; ]

I just don't know near enough about these yet to figure out where pricing should be on different p64's. Yes I know alot depends on condition and originality, but other than looking at what's for sale on GB and what's not selling at asking prices. Seems to vary widely. I'm most interested in a rifle that been taken care of not abused. Some history marks are no deal breaker. Rust or freckling would be turn-off. Bluing loss at the typical places is ok... like the slight worn look that shows usage. Most interested in 270 because I already shoot it. Not sure on standard or fwt or if it matters. I do like the stocks with the inletted butt plate. Hope haven't shown my cards here. Would be nice to here some thoughts on current decent/fair pricing for different rifles. I've already had huntershooter58 offer up a nice rifle, but I'm just not even sure where an offer should land.

Good questions. My question is do you want a shooter or a collectors piece? Both gunnut and huntershooter58 are great guys. They won't steer you wrong, or take advantage of you. So, I guess we would need more info on what it is exactly that you are wanting. I know you are looking for a blued/wood stock specimen. For your first pre 64, it should be a nice one. Take your time, and weigh out what it is exactly you want. The 270 winchester pre 64 is the epitome of pre 64's. The STD's tend to shoot a little better than the FWT's, but don't be afraid of that either. Most fwt 270's I've seen, have shot lights out. If you are interested in a std wt with a custom stock, I'd post it up here and ask the guys what they think a good deal for the rifle would be. Then we could go from there. That way it's right out in the open, and fair.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I just don't know near enough about these yet to figure out where pricing should be on different p64's. On the better end of shooter grade. I'm not at all opposed to a rifle that has great metal but the stock could use a refresh. All original is preferred. Thanks for the offer bsa. Wouldn't mind a little more info and a picture.

Here is one I ran across. What's the general opinion on this rifle? https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1019492915

I'd be all over a rifle like that myself. While I do like the aluminum buttplate a tiny bit more, for a clean rifle like that, I'd overlook it. For a rifle like that, I'd expect to pay 1200-1400 bucks. The 270 Featherweight is THE rifle if you carry your rifle. Just my opinion, so folks might not even slow down if they saw it laying in the street, but as a hunter, I like clean rifles but they don't need to be perfect.

That is a nice original specimen. 1959 fwt with composite butt plate. Keeping in mind, those are not as desirable as the earlier ones with the aluminum butt plates. That would make someone a great rifle though. Price is not out of reason. The only thing that would concern me is the slight corrosion on the front hood. The rest of the rifle looks pretty good though I'd probably want to see pictures of the action out of the stock, to make sure there are no rust issues.

Yea I like the butt plate with the little beak on the top thT protrudes into the butt. Are both the standard/steel and fwt/aluminum like that? When did they switch to plastic?

I have seen 59's with metal. I think it just depended on the day. If they happened to find one when or a bunch, they must've just got put on the guns. No perfect rhyme or reason. I think mine is a 56 but don't hold me to it.

Beautiful FWT Big B, think mines a 1960, it has the composite butt plate, and BSA is right too, mines bone stock, no float, no bed, no trigger tickling, no nothing, that little heifer will stack all the 150gr NPT's you care to waste into neat little circles.

I’ve not seen many sick P64 270’s that don’t shoot pretty darned good. My old gunsmith, who was a major pre 64 aficionado, told me that the best shooting pre 64's were always the 270's. STD, FWT, it did not matter, according to him. He's also the one that had new ones still in the box. He offered me a new 270 FWT, back when I bought my first one, and my jaw dropped when I looked at it. I always thought my rifles looked pristine, but the new one put all of them to shame. Now I kick myself in the azz for not buying it. He said he had never shot it, so he pointed to the best shooter in the bunch, because he knows I like accurate rifles. He said the one I bought (for $1,350.00) would put 5 shots into a dime at 100 yards. After I bought it, I took it out, and he was right. The damn thing easily shot 3/4" all day long. What's laughable, is you still have ignorant guys on places like youtube shooting videos of old model 70's shooting 2-3" groups and saying that's just how they are. They are old rifles, and that kind of accuracy was normal back in the day. I'll usually leave a nice comment in those videos.. ha ha..

Couple things. I agree with all the advice given here, my own observations are the same.
I would add that I originally thought it would be no problem to find and buy a .270FW that met my requirements at about any time. That was wrong. It took about 3 months I would say to find the first one and about the same again for the second one I bought. They don't come up for sale as often as one might think. The 06's are more frequently encountered, as are the .243's.
Id also point out that these are often found with the plastic buttplate but not always found with the hand cut, shall we say larger profile, checkering. I haven't seen an aluminum buttplate and scant checkering, they may be out there. I think plastic and hand cut is acceptable (because that stock finishing is more important to me than the plate) but it would take a super clean rifle with the scant checkering to interest me much. I found one like that and bought it, glad to own it. But I thought it worth pointing out that the checkering is different in that era of manufacture and perhaps (it is to me at least) more important than the butt plate.

But I thought it worth pointing out that the checkering is different in that era of manufacture and perhaps (it is to me at least) more important than the butt plate. It took me far longer than 3 months to find the first 270 fwt I owned. I even told guys what I was looking for. I was being pretty particular though. Had to be an older aluminum butt plate model, and in excellent condition. It took about a year to find the right one, and that one came to me, from a very well known Winchester model 70 gunsmith. This is one rifle I paid dearly for though. Like I said in another post ($1,350.00). This one was made in 1957, and all original. I later put it in a nice Hunters Compact Mcmillan, and sold the original stock. Got $425 out of the stock about 4 years ago, so you know it was a pretty nice one. That more than paid for the Mcmillan, which I bougth for $350.00. To me, if you are concerned about pre 64 model 70 checkering, you might as well look for a different rifle, because none of them are perfect. Just how it is. The checkering on my Japanese model 52 is superior, in every way shape and form, just to give an example. We all know the pre 64 model 70's have less than perfect checkering too. We buy them for the rifles they are though. Fast forward to the fwt I have now. I bought that one about 7 months ago, and like a lot of them you see, its had a recoil pad put on it. That instantly turns them into a "shooter grade". They are then prime candidates for a full glass bedding job, and accurizing treatment. Just the way I see it. I paid $729 for that fwt, because the shop did not know what it was worth. I later sold the scope that was on it for $225.00, to recoup some of the initial cost. I am out and about very often, and do not run into pre 64 270 fwt's that often, let alone one for that price. To be honest, in all of last year, that is the only pre 64 270 fwt I saw. I saw plenty of XTR FWTs, and a ton of std wt's, but only 1 270 fwt. If you are finding them every 3 months, you live in a place where they are far more abundant than any place I've ever lived. That is cool, as that may bring the price down on them?? I'd wager a bet, that most guys aren't seeing the 270 fwt's on the used rifle racks either. Moral of the story, if you can find a primo 270 fwt for a good deal, jump on it, because they don't surface very often. The one I have is well worn, but it's going to stay with me for a very long time.. YMMV..

I did. Christmas present of the decade! Yeah, it's a sweet one!!! Sitting here with a stupid smile two hours later, took the little 7mm to the chrono, worked up to 47gr IMR-4350 under the 175gr Grand Slams at 3.150" lit with CCI-250's in the new very old stock WW brass cases, "Super Speed" LOL, hit 2721 fps with E.S. of 12 fps with no over pressure signs, clickers, heavy bolt, ejector slot swipes, flattened primers etc,, it was 36 degrees and that powder being what it is I loaded 46gr for groups when the wind settles. That'll leave plenty of room for 95 degree African hunting, i have a feeling this rifle is going to want to be a good shooter, just for kicks, i ordered 4 boxes of 170gr Norma Oryx bullets in case I'm able to tear up the 175 SGS's here on bullet test media later.

Yes Sir, sure am, also ordered some 7mm 160gr North Fork flat point solids for the rifle, man my minds working, bust a big African Antelope with a soft, if he turns to run pop him on the butt with a solid and shoot lengthways through, bet it'll dump him, BTW, those 170gr Oryx bullets at ravenrocksprecision for less than 50 cents each with free shipping are a hell of a deal, got some 358 cal 250gr Oryxs' too, as we all know, bullets wont spoil, there may come a day we cant order crap.
