That was something! Never been in an earthquake. Hope I never am. Amazing power. Have survived 3 hurricanes.

thing is you never know when they are going to stop, start, or get worse.

nothing like the footage from Japan.

A very dynamic planet we live on.

billions of years old and still moving and cooling and shaking.

What a disaster. I guess tsunamis go hand in hand with earthquakes, there.

I woke up to a small earthquake while on Long Island, once. I guess it was about 5:00 AM and I woke to things rattling around in my room. Turned on the news and they said we had a small earthquake.

A Vietnamese woman I knew in Biloxi moved there from San Francisco after the earthquake there 30? years ago. Their house was destroyed and caught fire and burned up. They lost everything , ran out with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Lost her Aunt and two cousins.
She said they were trying to run away from the buildings but were falling down because the road was swaying back and forth - up and down. Her hands were visibly shaking after talking about it.

The tsunami in the OP video is an old one. Compare -1:39 in the OP video to the 2011 scene in this article from 2015.

Was setting in a restaurant in Herndon one day with the crew having lunch and one hit
Was enough to do some structural damage in some places
The walls of the restaurant got wavy as did the glass in the windows
Everybody made a dash for the parking lot cars were shaking and some alarms going off
Didn’t last long , don’t remember what it registered but was an eye opener

Something to keep in mind when you see footage from their subways: some Japanese subways are 150 feet below ground. I wouldn’t want to be that far below surface when things start shaking.

Quake was located off Japan's inland coast between Japan and Korea's, won't be any tsunamis.

The Post Tension Cables in that structure did their jobs but probably amplified the shaking as they did it.

7.4 is no joke

I was around 3 miles from the epicenter of the Whittier Quake 30+ years ago if I remember right it was a 6.4.
I could be wrong on that.

When the Quake hit it sounded like a freight train heading into the steel shop I was working in and everyone stopped working and looked in the direction that it was coming.

When it got to us we had 3 waves role threw the shop. Steel was screeching and the building was waving back and forth about 3 ft from plumb each side.

The ground lifted us up like we were walking on a water bed about 8 or 9 inches with each wave.
And then Silence no sound at all.

We walked around for weeks wondering if the ground was gunna turn to jello again.

I feel for the Japanese they have more Earthquakes than Commyfornia and They work together with the Earthquake engineering of just about everything.
