With the 6.5 cartridges working as well as they do for me I haven`t used anything bigger in years. The `06, 308, 7-08, 270, and 32 all have been demoted to range rifles. Never had even a thought about useing more then the `06 for deer anyway.....

I've killed deer with everything from a 22-250, to a 338 mag. and 375 Win.
My latest deer rifle is a 45-70.
I go both ways on cals.

I like medium bores: nothing under .224 or over .577.

Overall Im a Premium bullet kind of guy.

Although I have a variety of C&C (cup-and-core) hunting loads for my Marlins (.30-30, .375 Win and 45-70) the only rifle I hunt with using C&C bullets is the .375 Win and only there because no one make a proper bonded bullet for that cartridge that works in a tube magazine. The .30-30 gets hunted with a Partition RN and the .45-70 gets North Forks. The bolt guns usually get North Forks but the .257 Roberts gets an A-Frame (no North Fork available in .25 caliber). I also load up TSX ad AccuBond in hunting loads but have taken no game with them as yet.

My opinion is that the smaller and/or faster the cartridge the more important the choice of bullet becomes.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I prefer 308 and up for heavy cover and 6.5MM and up for open shooting.

Light for caliber bullets and high velocity works best for the game and country I hunt. Guess I fall in with the thinking of Weatherby more than Keith.

As has been spoken previously, I am firmly entrenched in the Elmer Keith school of philosophy! Give me the mediums: 8mm-.375. smile

However, that being said, I have a couple of dozen or more small bore deer rifles that I highly favor. Mostly I just shoot them, I don't hunt with them. smile 6.5x55, 7mm-08, .280 Rem heads the list...

Oh He!!, I just like them all... smile I have rifles in about every bore size from .204 Ruger to .45-70. Some chamberings you may have heard of and some perhaps you haven't. smile The more odd it is, the better I like it. smile

I make no apologies... But, I concluded a long time ago, it doesn't much matter what you aim at a deer, If you use a proper bullet and put it in the proper place, it's a done deal!

I have one rifle over 30 Cal and that's my elk and bear gun, a .338 win mag. Everything else is .30 cal or less. My preference is a 280 Rem and I have a couple of those, a 7X57, a 270, a couple of 243's and three 308's that I have never used. I'm not sure why I have them but I do. Although I do have the hots for a .375 Ruger and if the 416 Ruger comes to light I will have one of those as well. I'm so confused......

Take 2 aspirin and go home and rest. It is the best cure for most ailments. Warning - you might need something stronger though when the urge to buy a new rifle hits!

All of 'em. Why limit yourself? As long as you are accurate with a given rifle (As long as it's legal..), put a PROPER boolit where it's supposed to go and fill a tag. Choosing "sides", while entertaining, is hardly worthwhile...

I was raised on and strongly influenced by Jack O'Connor books and stories, don't know why I never read Keith back then. I bought my first rifle a Mod 700 in .270 back in high school. I'm not a true rifle loony like a lot of you guys, but I still have that .270, another .270 Kimber mod 89, a 7mm rem mag and a Savage 99 in 300 Savage that was left to me by my Father in law.

I'm going to build a .257 Roberts and that should take care of all my rifle needs not counting .22s, I have a Henry lever action and Ruger 10-22. I'd say I'm still an O'Connorite but I'm intrigued by the tought of a .338-06.

I have nothing smaller in a centre-fire than a 243 Winchester, and nothing larger than a 45-70. I have several in between, but mostly 30 cals. Cut my teeth on an '06 and presently have three of them. Even the .312 is cool (303 Brit). Two of my favourites right now are a 45-70 and a 405 Winchester. Go to gun this year was the 06, but the last 6 years was a 300 WM.

As others have said, a good bullet in the appropriate place = done deal.

.257s are my favorites. Only thing over thirty(06) caliber is a .375H&H.

Mr. ChipM:
I started out with the .30s and then moved to the .33s, so my initial inclinations were certainly more toward Elmers line of thought.

Somewhere along the way I built a 6.5x55 for my father and then a good friend got a .25-06. Low and behold they worked just fine..

When I started fooling with rifles for our daughters a couple years ago I began to go down yet another path of learning.

Overall its been fun, but it has made me rethink much of what I knew. So weve used a range of calibers and weights from 100gr. .25s to 250gr. .33s. Im currently looking into .22cal TSXs and Ill bet they will work just fine as long as I do my part.

Happy New Year to you all!
Dwayne
