Stack as many as you can one deep on it then stack another bale on each of those and count them up. That's how many.

No one GAF how much they all weigh.

Without the dimensions of the bales, no way to answer. Additionally the weight capacity of the trailer is irrelevant.

Here is a easier math question. How much dirt is in a hole 6' wide 6'long and 6'deep ?

Given 2 string bales, 60 on the flat is a good number. 2 - 4 more on the tongue.

But wtf has one stacking only 2 high?

I'm too lazy to do math - are you stacking them on end or side?

14 foot trailer. 2 bales laying flat, side to side x 7 = 14. Double that stack, you got 28.

If you can't quite get a row of seven on the length of the trailer, minus 4 bales and you got 26.

26.

Final answer.

Bigger they are the cheaper per ton... this is the winner 36x48x96? You mention 22" sides on the trailer but not a tailgate. So, 4 down sitting on 36" sides... then 5 on top level 96" wide and again sitting on the 36" sides. So, 9 large bales... but that would put you at 5.85 tons on the average. So, it would have to be just 4 bales on top too. So, 8 large bales.
