assuming that it is still in decent shape, regular 230 grain ball ammo should do fine

This. Exactly. Should function fine through it, as well.

I agree with the statements above......thy were designed for 230 gr at 850 fps. Don't use any +P ammo. Clean and lubricate it well...with grease. Would be good to replace the recoil spring as well. Great 1911's.

Yes, if the one in it is worn out, using it could overly stress the steel via battering under recoil.

Replace the recoil spring and have at it!

Pretend you're hunting germans.

Watch that it don't bite you. There isn’t a lot of metal around the grip safety.

Mine shows manufactured 1913 by the serial number. Shoot it often with regular 230 grain ball ammo. I use a piece of tape in the web of my shooting hand to keep from getting bit by the hammer on recoil. Just wish it could talk as it would have some good stories. Been in the family for over 80 years.

Depends on how meaty your hands are. A 1911 (not a1) will bite the far out of me, as the hammer will pinch me between it and the grip safety. An A1 grip safety SOMETIMES is ok for me, depending on just how the hammer and safety tang are designed, and what spot the two touch each other. My dad can hold one and not come anywhere near overlapping the end of the grip safety tang, but my hand sure does.

I have one made in 1916. I shoot it with a handload of 5 gr or Red Dot and a 230 grain flat nose cast bullet.
It was given to me years ago by a friend and I believe it had new (in the 1970s) springs in it, but I don't know for sure.
It works perfectly and is quite accurate.
