And that sure looks like a Savage 250-3000 to me.. Picture is of Ozark Riply as published in 1921. Heck of an animal!

Odd thing is that in the article he refers to shooting it twice with his Remington.

I love those old pictures as well as old advertisement as testimonials. Colt had some interesting ones. In one a man is shown with a bear he killed with his Colt 1908 in 25 ACP and another with a man standing next to a large bull moose he killed with his Colt Woodsman 22. Please keep the photos and stories coming.

In those old pictures I wonder how many of them animals actually got killed with the weapon shown in the picture?

I was on a caribou hunt in Manitoba about 20 years ago and an outdoor writer was in camp. He killed a nice caribou with a 300 Win Mag. All of the pictures were taken with him sporting archery equipment.

Dang.. could have sworn I put in that the picture is from a New Brunswick hunt. Northeast of Maine, I believe.

I remember reading an article by Larry Koller, IIRC. He was hunting up north via canoe and came upon a bull moose. He grabbed a rifle and sighted on the moose and saw the red bead and knew he'd grabbed his deer rifle but, decided to shoot anyway. Killed the moose with one shot from his .250-3000.

I'm still learning the 99's, but I assume his rifle was possibly a'T'?

If a factory front sight then YES. The T was the only model with a standard front sight having a red bead.

Thanks for sharing that link SuperCub, very nice.

I do believe I have seen a lot of those in Outdoor Life, way back in the day.

Cheers ~

some great pics on that face book page.
This pic is my wife's grandfather visiting the doctor in White Court, Alberta, about 1912. Note all the cool guns hanging on the wall.

Here's the cover to a small booklet of old pictures that was handed out to displayers at the last Savage Fest, each booklet was individualized with their forum name and a note that they were not in the picture, just to avoid any confusion...
[Linked Image]
The one in the center is holding an 1895, the other two look like 1899's based on the ends of the forearms.

A couple out of the booklet -

That's a terrible picture, what can you see that identifies the rifle as a 250? As for him using a Remington, I have no idea what Ripley looks like, are you sure he wasn't taking the picture?

Pistol grip, looks like perchbelly.. only standard model with that was the Savage 1899 model 250-3000. It could be a special order different model, an 1899H with pistol grip for example. But odds are in favor of the 250-3000.

And the photo was with the article.. don't know anything beyond that.
