Well, our back pasture is in one of those counties.

Well, our back pasture is in one of those counties. I bet you don't have illegals and blacks picking your cotton. But, you'unce need to pay your fair share of reparations and give up your farm.

Only thing we raise here are world champion rocks! 🤣 And I come from a long line of sharecroppers and migrant cotton pickers. Hell we was probably picking "their" cotton!!! 🤣

Really ironic. Back in the late 1800's, early 1900's, families moved out into that barren, caliche, mesquite, rattle snake infested region because. Land was dirt cheap! (10 cents an acre?) Cattle, because of the mineral content of the soil, would get mud fat on damned little graze. Calcium, being one of the major elements, grew some great big buck deer too!
One farmer claimed his cattle had to graze in a long lope, just to get a mouthful. ....and most importantly, nobody wanted the stuff! Water was scarce. Trees were small. So they bought hundreds of acres!
Families that lived on and ranched that stuff were T-O-U-G-H!!!!!! They lived from one cattle season to the next with seldom more than 2 nickels to rub together. In the 50's, folks that liked to hunt figured out those families would lease an area big enough to hunt, probably for what their grampa paid for it! Ten cents an acre! Along comes Frito-Lay, Dr Pepper, and various other large corporations, law firms and medical groups. They paid (for that era!) amazing sums for exclusive hunting rights to huge sections of property. i.e. the "deer lease"! Now, pop could afford to build momma something besides a three room, limestone hut. The companies built "bunk houses" for their guests. Fed the deer and did NOT interfere with the family's cattle program. Momma drove around in an air conditioned Suburban and poor little Susie got to go to school at SMU in Dallas! SMU has TONS of lawyers, investors, bankers, real estate brokers, etc.... Guess who Susie married and took back to "Th' Ranch"?
Yeppers vaquero's and "wet's" helped those guy get their "spread" going. Became like family and because Pop, Jr stayed at "Th' Ranch", he ended up marrying Pauncho's granddaughter, Maria!
"The road goes on forever and the party never ends!"
So blame the "lease system" on some old hard scrabble, rock ranchers that were too stupid to leave and too ornery to quit and a hell.of a lot smarter than a lotnof folks give 'em credit for!
Won't claim to the "factuality" of the story, but it DOES follow the general guidelines. Broke and penniless at the turn of the 20th century and wealthy as an oil baron in 2 generations!

All my Dad's siblings were farmers... and lever action loonies. 😝
