Just got through putting 2 gallons from the
bucket into jars.

Anybody here have a recipe for coyote bait
that they'd share? I don't make any for sale,
or trap for fur. These ratty good for nothing
dogs here can't be sold, so there's no use to
skin and cure the hides.
I try to work on the varmints to benefit the
local edible wildlife and to help keep the
neighbor livestock and pets safe and secure.

They are quite fond of a neighbor's Schipperkes. Came right into the yard and ate them up.

Yeah they will. Whatever is slower or holds
still long enough. Ate a lady's little cutesy pie
dog while she was watching it poop from her
back deck. Ran off with it squalling the whole
way back to the brush, then it chomped down.
Doesn't take much to turn a rainbow and unicorn
farts type into a varmint hater.
One of the universities here a while back did
some kind of study and figured that coyotes
love cats and cat turds best out of what they
tried.

Myself, I've been using the Maxima bait
solution the last 2 batches of meat bait
and was wanting to try something different
if anybody had some homegrown recipe
that they didn't mind sharing on the site.
Preferably something that didn't involve
expensive tinctures or oils that have to
be purchased. I'm pretty sure that what
I've used in the past is mostly fish oil
with maybe some gland and/or urine
or the like.

If you have the land, go to the livestock auction and buy whatever critter floats your boat. Like The sick cows that the fast food places buy. Take it to your field along woods line. In a couple days you’ll heat up your barrels.

I’ll look for some recipes some old govt trappers gave me. If you can start putting up some horse meat and rattlesnake that would be good. Both make good bases for bait.

Do you pull glands from your catch?

Only coyote butt glands and pads lately.
Only use those for lure

No horses available for donations in
my area. The only rattlers are the protected
timber rattlers, and I wouldn't risk TPWD
dancing on my head over that.
There's usually people I know that waste
meat by letting it get too old or trying to
clean out whatever for something fresh.
Then there's some critters that just can't
resist wanting to participate

I hope to get one of those nice skunk
poles later on and I'd probably concentrate
more on those given the price of quill
It's a shame that these hides are worthless
and a jar of pure stink is more valuable

Horse hoof trimmings ground fine. Place in a clean Mason jar w/ enough clean rain water to cover plus about an inch. Bury for 30 days deep enough not to freeze. Strain & use at DEEP dirthole or chaff sets. Makes a strong digging responce.

Some years back when I was looking for a recipe, I
was given a scribbled paper with what sounded
like a good formula, and one of the key ingredients
was hooves and trimmings that were roasted/charred
and ground. I approached a couple of farriers about
their waste, and apparently it's a sought after
something so that what would otherwise be trash
is spoken for. Too much trouble to pursue any
further, and I wasn't going around looking for
beaver grease to go with it, so I scratched that off

I go to the local meat market and ask for the "saw dust" from their meat saws. Ball it up into little meat balls and drop it in a bait hole or just spread it around. Works pretty good. Also just getting scraps will attract them as well.

Folks are very secretive with their trapping
information even today with people like
me that don't pose any competition

Something I have learned without being
told is that different urines used at a set
will also attract other animals. ( bobcat
urine in my case) I was thinking that
the animals were curious about the urine,
then the bait is what did the job getting
the animals in the trap. But I had used only bobcat
urine for a post set with no bait and
got other animals besides felines

If I find anything out about making inexpensive
bait at home without having to buy expensive
ingredients, I'll post here for everybody

I ground up a couple gallon of deer. One is just trimmings and one contains the heart liver and lungs. I also ground up a couple gallons of bobcat meat and one gallon of beaver. I treated all of the with a variety of commercial bait solutions.

Going to start trialing them this summer to see how the local population reacts.

I've been using bait solutions myself, I was
just figuring that there's a way to make my
own from stuff I already have and/or ingredients
that I could come by without having to order
something from several states away

The ones I've had the best success with were the
Federales and Maxima bait solutions
I've tried a couple of others that smelled more
or less like a $20.00 bottle of sour urine with
some other unidentifiable odors. Not enough
success with those to justify the expense and
the trouble of processing the meat base

One of the books I bought some years ago by
Nick Wyshinsky had a quote from him that
" many old time secret ingredient formulas
consist of fish oil and gland materials of the
animal from which it is intended to attract.
No more, no less. In some cases, the fish oil
overpowers the gland odors to such extent that
the fish odor alone provides the call, if indeed
there is one "

That one quote makes more sense to me
than all of the words in the books I have
than any other

Dunlap, federales and dobbins are the 3 I used. I also added extra castor and anal glands from some skunks I caught.

I had the most success last year with Cavens Hiawatha valley bait. They are bringing me a couple gallons to the state convention this fall.

I caught 23 coyotes last year which was my first year going after them. I am setting a goal of 30 this year.

I'm hoping you get 50 without trying.
Coyotes and coydogs around here cause
many problems
Too bad more people that hunt don't take
an interest in varmint control for the benefit
of the game species

near you some day. The guys are pretty open about sharing trapping
knowledge.
