As one of those prick managers (major oil) I always felt that if an employee can quit on a whim I can toss him/her on a whim. It worked well in my last 10 years abroad.

Been slow for us, they could have easily cut several from all three shifts last month,
they didn't.

We have 2 types of reduction in force.
Furloughs and layoffs.

Furloughs are for one week, up to two weeks.
Voluntary starting with top seniority, bottom guys go if no one volunteers.
Done by the job that's overstuffed.

Layoffs are from the bottom up, however many need cut.
Then the ones left move around to fill open jobs based on previous job held, seniority,
and job code held. It's an ugly process, one we hopefully avoid.
For many reasons.

The union does protect me from cuts.
Due to decades of service. (Top 6th, if they cut to me they can't run the place)
Paid my dues on that though, lost 3 years over a 9 year span starting out.

Doesn't matter much that I'm secure, being unemployed sucks.
I hate to see it as much for others an I hated it for myself.
I had an easy backup, most dont.

Sorry to hear of this. I hope a window opens for you soon.

This thread is a bit interesting. I have been polling my customers about their thoughts on our local economy as we get into 2024. The opinions are all over the place. So far, we have started the year pretty slow. It has only been a couple weeks, and weather has certainly been a factor. This being an election year could make things interesting.

Electricians are always in short supply here in the Flathead. Problem is "affordable" housing if you don't already own property.

Always sad to hear of layoffs, I put in 45 years with one company and retired early, not many jobs like that today.

Hopefully things will take a better turn now for the OP.

Sorry for anyone that gets let go in a Reduction in Force. I hate this time of year because our company always has layoffs in January. They just let go of 150 people yesterday. Pretty big layoff this time around..It's usually about 40 to 50 people....

RMiller - so sorry to hear of your situation. I can't say BTDT, because I haven't/didn't.

Right out of college I went 5 months before finding a paid internship that was to last 3 months. I was at my first 'real' full time job for 5 years, left that for another job and stayed there for 5 years. Next job I stayed at for 17 years and my bride was transferred 3 states away. I stayed home for 3 months and unpacked everything we had. Found another job and was there for 3 years. Had a chance to go out on my own and stayed with that for another 12 1/2 years. Except for the 3 months I stayed home (by choice), the longest I was not employed was a weekend. I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time for almost 43 years, then I retired 6 years ago.

With your trade and skills, you won't be without a job for very long.

I wish you all the best sir.

Unfortunately that’s not the way it works. They probably hired two more office employees when they laid him off. .

During her career, my wife worked 60-80 h/w on average. Every time she moved on they hired 2 or 3 people to replace her. Less competent, better brown nosers. And they only "worked" to contract hours.

Truth.

But, here's a pick me up. I never lost a job that I didn't get something better.

Bullschitt.
It does not work that way in construction.
If I have a guy that is not cutting it, he gets a lay-off check. Period.
Not only is it a bad deal for the company, it's not fair to the other guys that pull their weight.
Dead wood gets cut.

OP, if your area is slow, think about doing some out of town work.
I did it for several years and it sucks at first but I got used to it.

Sorry to hear this, was lucky, had three jobs in 52 years of working, quit all 3. An old pipefitter told me. When you quit, get fired, get laid off, as you go out the door, wave goodbye and say “ Adios all you mutherfuuuckers”. I did that every time I left.

I think it is Biden and Tester that can be credited with the missile upgrade project.

But no I have not voted for those candidates. Maybe Tester when he ran against Rosendale. I often vote for independents.

my old man traveled the country for construction, wherever there was work that's where he went . Later in life he just said screw it, I'll work when there is work around here, and I won't when it runs out.

what I learned about that is , its feast or famine. One week you have hot dogs for dinner every night, the next week the old man is buying a new air conditioner. It was highly motivational for me.

Back in the day with my line of work if you got laid off you just go down the road a bit and another place will hire you when you pass the tests. Often for a little bit better paycheck. Relax, take a couple weeks off, start a new job, no big deal. Not that way anymore though. Lucky to have 13 years in at my current gig and 8 more to go to retire. Far enough up the list now I won't get laid off unless some major catastrophe happens.

while biden is a pos, cheap money for to long has a lot to do with inflation and the slow down we are seeing now.

I don't know of any elected politician that can keep things at just a steady growth, its always boom and then bust.

To the OP, you need to look at Williston ND or West Texas.

For long term employment I'd suggest the vast Houston/Gulf Coast area refining and petrochemical multiplexes.
