Right now prime fat Angus are bringing 1.75lb. on the hoof. A little math, 1600 lb. steer will hang 65% or 1040 lbs., after boning you will it will net another 65% or 676LBS.
1600x1.75=2800.00
processing=750.00..........total $3550.00 divide by 676 =5.25 lb. Thats whole sale off the farm. Don't confuse them with the facts. "%$@@$%!!!" Butchers! F'd me again! Bought half a 1500# cow, got 350# of meat. Where in the heck is the other 400#? Sure there is some loss, but holy hell?" Your 65% yields are even on the optimistic side even. You might only pit 55% on the rail. Of course I forgot, everyone raises PRIME beef. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So half the 1500lbr gave you 350lbs finished? Total 700lbs from that carcass? I think you did well. Osky Most people don't understand cutting loss much at all. I grew up in the meat packing business, and we did game processing as well. It was really interesting to see a guy bring in a buck that dressed 85 pounds that he shot 3 times with a 30-06, through both hams and both shoulders, and wonder why he only had 30 pounds of deer meat when he picked it up...  Then you get some like that that always went around saying we took part of his deer meat.... RIGHT.... Like I want part of that shot up mess that you strapped to the hood of the car and drove 5 hours from the lease in 75 degree weather.

I figure on a full beef carcass hung for 20-40 days I probably lose 40-50 lb weight just in loss of moisture. Other things factor in as well.

My herd is fairly small. But I am far from getting rich off of them. It is much easier to lose money then make it raising cattle. Hay and fuel arent getting less expensive!

A cow, and they vary alot, Canners, cutters etc. can cut between 30 and 55 %. I sold a couple open second calfers this summer for 1.40 lb. If you got 350lb of meat from a 1/2 of a 1500lb. cow, you did very well.
