Yup. You hit the nail on the head and I totally agree. Of course it meant once I learned it was that way I ended up with no dedication to a place that would just dump you after busting your tail. Although it gave me more time at home and home and family is what life is really about. Work is just a PITA aside to pay bills. I quit going in early or staying late. And just did my job. They still got more from me than most 8 hour a day workers but it is what it is.

I'd prefer no contract at all and thats the way it should be IMHO. That way nothing is held over either parties head.

Well said!

I was laid off in 2012. All I'll say is, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me, I found a better job, still at it.

Hang in there.

I wish you all the best sir.

Unfortunately that’s not the way it works. They probably hired two more office employees when they laid him off.

To the OP, you need to look at Williston ND or West Texas.

For long term employment I'd suggest the vast Houston/Gulf Coast area refining and petrochemical multiplexes.

This time of the year we get several “temp” welders.

Not inexperienced, just temporary.

These are the guys that chase shutdowns and turn arounds.

Come home for the holidays and want to make a couple checks…

Holidays over, they are gone back on the road.

Hard for me to comprehend, getting laid off. I worked 39 years for same company, many jobs and different states. Never occurred to me that I’d get laid off.
Good luck to those that do get laid off. I guess this is not the worst time for that, with a decent job market.

Ironic that it’s accepted to think that way for employers. Hire when you want, lay off when you want, RIF, when you want. Decide to send guys home early or just not work tomorrow. Do wage surveys, pay the least an employee will work for.

The opposite is expected from employees.
Be early, stay late, give 100%.

Darn lucky in my current position.
Pay is great, considering everything.
That’s not why I’m lucky.
Handed orders and ask when/if they can be done.
Never questioned, if I’m not busy they assume it’s under control, no HR department!
No HR department!!!

Yeah, it’s good

Sorry to hear. I know how it feels, layoffs are common in my industry.

If you get cut, don’t take it personally. It’s not a statement on your job skills.

Both times I got cut it led to better opportunities. It will for you, too.

Brother Bob,
While I cannot disagree with what you said. Things go much deeper than that.
We are experiencing crony capitalism mixed with socialism and heading for communism.... Unions are a large part of this trend.
We need to return to true capitalism to fix our economic woes...
Miller is a staunch union man and tester supporter, therefore he is about to suffer from the consequences of his ignorance!

Didn't take long. Got my pink slip at noon and got a new job by 2 pm. Local contractor that I worked for a couple times as an apprentice.

Irfubar, you got issues dude. Ish you's, not ish me's.

The current base project is for a weapon storage facility before the actual missile upgrade itself.

Yeah, it’s good

Once the vast majority of companies get above a certain size (what size depends on company culture and leadership), people become just a number, - just another input on a spreadsheet.

However, not every company is like that, and even some large companies have a type of informal social contract with their employees. I was amazed at what some very large companies did for their impacted employees in the Houston area after Hurricane Harvey. Companies that size are bound to have layoffs when business conditions get bad, but not every company operates on a boom-bust hiring-layoff rollercostar. It's a two-way street, and loyalty by the company often is reciprocated by loyalty by the employees. YMMV
