Local shop has a mid 50's Savage 99 in .300 Savage, complete with a 1" Stith mount and either a steel tubed Weaver 2.5 or 4x fine crosshair scope. I wasn't able to get a pic, but it looks like it is in easily 90% or better condition. I'm guessing the rifle by itself would be around $800, but I have no idea on the scope and mount...any ideas?
I know pics would make this a lot easier, I will try and get a few tomorrow.

The mount and scope in that condition is right around $350 in my eye.
The advice to offer a grand for the setup sounds like a good place to start.

Kinda looks like the stock has an issue behind the back mount.

It appears the rifle is refinished, swivels removed and a chunk of wood missing at the tang. Wonder what else? The Stith mounts are worth ~$225 and can't say about the scope. Clear? Crosshairs/post good? I can't quite read the hang tag. Maybe you could help. ??

Any "modern" 1" scopes fit the Stith mounts? The Weaver is a standard fine crosshair, glass is decent (about what you would expect on an old Weaver).

I'll have to measure one of my Nikon 1-4.5s or maybe even a newer Weaver 1-3x...but they both may be too short.

The mount and scope in that condition is right around $350 in my eye. I would agree. 350-400 I don't see the chip as being a big deal. There is no crack behind it. That stock has a particularly good oriented grain. As the grain is 180 degrees to the force of recoil. Wood generally wants to split with the grain, not against it.

How much are they asking? Norm The OP has ovoided the question 3 times. Classic fishing expedition. The rifle is a dog. Buy for the Stith. Probably still overpay. Good luck.
