For those that load 32H&R magnum, what is your preferred powder?

I will be firing these out of a Jframe and I plan to use 85XTP JHPs.

Thank you

I use W-231/HP-38 for most everything.
Trail Boss for powder-puff lead loads.

I haven't worked with jacketed stuff in a .32 H&R since George H.W. Bush was president and don't remember the powders I used, I guess because I basically disliked the gun I was shooting it in - a Ruger Single Six. My current one is a re-chambered Colt Officer's Model (one of those that J&G Sales had rechambered from .32 Long 30 years ago in the belief they would be easier to sell - I wish they hadn't but there it is). It's bloody accurate and I'm assured by professionals "in the know" that with Colt's excellent metallurgy it's plenty good for H&R Mag pressures of 20K psi give or take. That said I see no use in loading it hot, and to that end I basically follow .32 Long data and life is good.

Do you not have access to a manual? The Lyman manual lists about a dozen powders for the H&R Mag.

My go-to load is an Accurate Mold's #311-105T, 105 grain as its name suggests, with Bullseye in the low 2.'s charge weights.

I like the cartridge so much that I'm seriously contemplating lining the barrel of an orphan Ballard single shot and chambering for it. Maybe stamp .32 X Long on the barrel so some clod doesn't cram a hot factory Mag load in it.

Figured I would cross link the two posts, anyone here have a spare set of 32H&R dies, bullets or brass they’re interested in offloading?

Google 32 H&R magnum "pet loads " This is a Handloader Magazine article by Brian Pearce.
That will give you some options . I suggest you start on the low end . Some of his mid to high end
loads can bring the heat. I use AA2 for 85 grain target loads and True Blue for 100 grain with
a little more oomph .

Sorry had to edit Bandleader back to Handloader. Isn't spellcheck great ?

CFEP, 244W, and 2400 have all shot well for me in 32 H&R with jackets and monos from 85-100gr.

HP-38 for the light loads. H110 and Lil Gun for the heavy loads.

I'm loading Titegroup for all my loads.

I loaded some Li'l Gun loads but never shot them.
The news from Freedom Arms testing that it caused premature wear on the forcing cones warned me away from Li'l Gun in Revolvers.

I've used Lil Gun in at least 6 32H&Rs over the last 20+ years and have never had an issue with it. I only use it for heavy bullets. I'm sure it is a problem at some point, but wonder if it's not more a problem for the .357-44 class cartridges.
Anyway, I burn a lot of Lil Gun and a lot of handguns and rifles and have been pleased with the results.

All this begs the question: how many of you run your .32 H&R Magnums at full throttle with every shot you fire? How many like it for its potential but rarely exercise that, preferring milder more economical "less blasty" loads for general shooting and reserve the hot stuff for serious applications (however you define that)?

Just curious. I fall into the latter group.

I push them pretty hot... +P territory. I use 32 S&WL for my lower velocity bloopers.

327 Fed if I really wanna get serious 😜

Just depends. My Ruger SP101 only fires hot 115gr gold dots. I really don't shoot it that often. My Freedom Arms probably shoots more heavy loads in both H&R and .327 than light loads. My single sixes shoot mostly medium 100gr hard cast loads.

I shoot a middle of the road to warm load in my single six with 100 gr cast bullets and unique most. It's a little blasty but not much recoil and super flat shooting.

If I want soft I shoot my 22 single six because I hate loading handgun ammo

I run mine about the same as my other revolvers I carry afield, middle weight bullets at mid speed. In my 32 that means 95-100gr SWCs at 1000-1200fps. 44s get 250s at 1150. 38/357s 150-160s at 1050.

For my uses this type of loading produces good accuracy, flat enough trajectory, and good performance on game, and without the horrible blast and recoil heavier loads come with.

I don't load 44s but I run my 32 at 1050 to 1100, my 38s with 158s at 1000-1050 and my 45 LCs with 250s at about 900. I use unique for all of those.

Not to blasty, they shoot well and are warm enough for unique to not be too dirty.
