I picked up a Marlin 336 a few years ago with some mild to moderate pitting. The price was too good to not take it... aka FREE. My plan now is to media/bead blast it down, then cerakote or duracoat it and redo the equally neglected wood. I know it won't be original or collectable, just gonna be a user rifle. Buddy has a blast cabinet, just don't know what the best media is to use.
Also looked at the durafill option, didn't know if that would be another easier/better route to take. I'm not a gunsmith by any means, but usually redo one neglected rie each winter, cheaper than going to the bar.

If you just painting this might be a easier option.

I had a rusty rifle blasted and then powdercoated. By far the toughtest coating you can imagine, and the textured coating I chose hid the rust. You can make it any color you want.

Fine Garnet. Order a bottle of solution from Brownells and scrounge up a SS tank and Parkerize it.

This... the Frontier Big 45 pad will take off just about any rust and pitting rust unless they are really deep pits. Won't damage existing blue...

A word of caution when glass beading to remove rust, once you've used the blast cabinet to remove rust the glass beads are contaminated with rust particles. If you then use the blaster to glass bead a non-rusted project you will embed particles of rust in your work. Discard beads after using for a rust removal job a fresh charge of beads eliminates this problem. Also glass beads break down after use and become less effective, start with fresh beads for an important project.

I’ve not done many, but I used glass beads. It has worked well.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

If you are going to send it off to be Cerakoted, let them blast the rust off. Abrasive blasting is required for proper Cerakoting.
And it won't be any glass beads!
Winchester rifles and Swarovski scopes.

I haven't used on guns, but dry ice beads work well for blasting rust. With little clean up!
