Missedbycracky , has removed barrels from the 99 and I was looking to see what kind of a reciever wrench he uses to do the job. I don't think a big crecent wrench or a big spanner is a good idea. I made my own 1903 Sringfield reciever wrench from the blueprints in Bophry's book but not sure what smiths are using on the 99 Savage.

That is my own design. Slightly different for detached vs rotary magazine. I hold the barrel in a barrel vise using aluminum inserts coated with rosin and turn the receiver tool with a 2" open end wrench. First I soak the threads 3 days in Kroil in case there is any rust or loctite on them. PB is better on rust, but not as effective on loctite, my view.

couple of guys i know put barrel in vise with heavy leather wrap and big cresent with leather in the jaws.

It looks like you use the big front magazine hole for torque. In the picture it looks like there's a scope mount on the receiver ring. I think I'll make one up like your's.

Yes on the big hole for torque. I keep 3 variations of this tool on hand. The magazine plug needs to be as large as the receiver will permit to avoid distortion of the receiver, and the detachable magazine models have a smaller bore and shorter depth. Likewise, the hole that clears the receiver ring should fit reasonably well so the tool remains aligned in those high torque conditions, and receiver ring dimensions can vary a lot. I used a piece of tubing for the plug on V1, and it did not work out well, so on subsequent versions, I used a solid plug.

You might guess that barrels can be pretty tight and therefore difficult to remove, good guess.

The scope mounting base must be removed before the wrench can be used. I just grabbed the nearest rifle that did not have a forearm installed so I could take the picture.
