a 22 hp on a later factory drilled & tapped receiver? Just reading the comments in the 22 hp bullet thread got me thinking it might be an interesting way to go or maybe just find a d&t earlier receiver, can't see this would not match a 223 or run close

Please remember its mid summer here so I may have little heat stroke causing strange thoughts

You can do it on any receiver you want, drilled and tapped or not. All you need is a barrel blank (Pac-Nor is the only supplier of .228" barrel blanks I know of, 5 groove, 8" or 10" twist) and someone to contour it to fit a Savage forearm, thread it, fit it, chamber it, cut the extractor and bolt guide cuts, fit sights, and blue it. Then comes the headache of the rotor and cartridge guide. Not insurmountable of course, but not a walk in the park either!

I bet someone will pipe up and say "well just make it a .224 barrel, those things are everywhere." Sure, some savings could be had, but then it would be a .219 Zipper and not a .22 Savage High Power wouldn't it?

I wish someone would. I threatened to do it for years but never did. Now that boat has sailed, I got my head wrapped around other things!

Could pick up a Stith or upcoming Lightfoot mount and scope your existing 22HP.

Gary I thought you would be just the bloke to take on this project and provide feedback to us all

Rory I have my 99E all set up now with Stith & Weaver thanks to Joe once it cools off I intend to shoot it.

Ive been a little lax in keeping up here, after bowel cancer I got the 1 year all clear then in December last year underwent head surgery for a new cochlear implant. It turned a bigger job than first thought so now I have no functioning balance at all so a slow recovery.

I found a really nice take down 22 hp that had was drilled & tapped by Bubba when on vacation down here I think its a mess and sell has welded up the holes and made a bigger mess but has a great bore and otherwise a clean rifle, would have made a good project gun

Hope all you fellas are doing well

what speed could i get just using the 50 grain in the 22HP .I have 6 or 7 barrels

i think the 25-35 and 22HP barrels were the most used and abused i have found.

I was digging on the idea of barreling a Stevens 44 1/2 in 22 Savage Hi Power but then the thought of finding bullets became a buzz kill. So I happened on the idea of necking it down to 223 and calling it a Savage 22 HP improved. Then Gary told me that would be a 219 Zipper. And that killed the buzz too.

What's your motivation driver? Do You already have the barrel? Plenty of .228" bullets and brass? You won't have to look too long for a D&T'd action

You can turn a 250 Savage to 22-250 with just a barrel switch, then switch back when you burn out the 22 barrel,

My personal motivation for building a scoped 22HP gopher-getter was already having an early action that was D&T'd. Then I went with 219 Zipper because it was in the same cartridge character as the 22HP,.. but uses .224" bullets.

219Z brass is still difficult to find, if that's the part you're into,

Been AWOL for a few days, long trip to Melbourne for specialist appointments for my wife, nice to live in the bush but 9 hour return trip isnt much fun

I wont be going ahead with my idea now just to many other things going on but will keep an eye open her in case others go down the rabbit hole
