My wife depends on oxygen concentrators, so we need enough capacity to run those for the duration of an outage, or enough gas in the tank to find a motel that still has power. Even so, my approach is more minimalist that some.

First, we keep her portable units and their spare batteries charged. That alone will carry us for a day.

We have a little generator/inverter that is dual fuel and can give us enough power to provide LED light, charge batteries, etc., but, of course, not enough to run the furnace. The dual fuel is important, because propane keeps a lot better than gasoline does. It's one of the Honda style generators, but a much less expensive brand. Two 20 pound propane bottles should last us at least 24 hours of running time, more than enough to weather a couple of full days of outage.

For instant use, I have a 20 AH and a 50 AH LiFePO4 battery. Those are always charged, and can provide LED light and will recharge the portable concentrators.

I also have 150 watts of solar panels, so if the sun shines, I can charge that way.

Be not weary in well doing.

One of those survival crank-up lanterns/lights. Or keep a dedicated modern lantern charged up:

In mid-range mode, you can use it for more than 24 hours

LED lanterns, the small ones that you lift the light up and it turns on automatically. They throw a lot of light for their small size, minimal weight and long battery life. I’ve bought several 3 packs from Costco and individual ones from Harbor Freight, Cabelas and a bunch of other places. They’re right around $10 and I have ones that I’ve used for 5 or 6 years without any issues. LED is the way to go. imho

That’s s what I do. Have a 5KW Honda. I put additive in the no ETOH gas, turn off the fuel and fun it dry.

I can turn on the gas valve and it’ll start with a pull or two.

I have my breaker box set up for generator plug in, turn on breakers I want to power. It’ll run refrig and freezers, lights and fans. If it’s cold, I’ll build a big fire in the fireplace. We generally lose power during hurricanes when it’s not that cold.

Kerosene lamp, flashlight as needed.

Our lamp hasn’t needed fuel in over 20 years.
Outages aren’t a thing since the REA replaced our poles and lines.

Old school oil lamps, an oil railroad lantern, a Coleman dual fuel lantern, candles....and a big ass generator to run the freezers, fridge, and whatever else needed at the moment.
