I just acquired a LH Ed Brown 416 Rem and am wondering which optics you guys are running. This will be primarily used in Africa for dg and pg. I would also like an illuminated reticle. Do I mess with qd mounts? Thanks in advance for any input.

The VX6 1-6 Patrol with illuminated dot duplex is on my list.

A 1.5-6x40something Zeiss SFP with illuminated reticle (Victory HT, I think) or the Kahles Helia CS 1.5-6 are my first choice, but out of production and pricey.

If you want to do the 2 scopes route, one for DG and one for PG, the 1-4 Trijicon Accu-point woukd be good for the DG. The PG scope can be any quality scope between 2 and 9 or 10x.

Vortex pst gen 2 will do you nicely

I have an SWFA 1-6 HD on a 375 H&H. Really like the reticle for the purposes you stated. On 2x it's fast like a large aperture peep; on 6x the outer circle goes away and leaves the MQ, which is great for further off shots. It is lit. It has so far been very rugged.

I have it in Leupold QD mounts on Warne Maxima bases. Nice and low over the barrel. I have the sights zeroed.

S&B Zenith 1.1-4x24mm with FD9 (although 4 and 7 work for me too).

You'll probably need something with a reticle that lights up, has hash marks for windage and elevation, a main tube as big around as a truck axle, weighs 2.5 lbs. and is dialable with zero stops for those long shots on windy days. At least most shooters and the retards at the scope companies apparently think so since they don't make any good, basic, lightweight, compact hunting scopes anymore.

I was in Scheels yesterday and the only low power scope they had was an EO Tech. I did look through that. That seemed fine. Wish they had some more options. Definitely want it to start on 1 power. Thanks for the input. I'll check those out you mentioned.

I used the old Weaver Classic 1x3 on q 416 Remington, then later a 416 Rigby, lastly a 375 H&H. It held up great, kept zero also. I have also had the same great experience with the Leupold 2.5X. Less is more, so they say. I used a older 2.5x8 on hard kickers alot, finally a ultra Lwt MGA in 340 Wby, braked tore the guts out of it, 10days before my S.A. trip. Put a Zeiss Conquest 3x9 on it, it lasted less than 20rds. Good luck to you, whatever you end up with.

on my Ruger #1 35 Whelen i have a Burris 1-6x24 30 tube illuminate , very tough scope had one of these on my 22 K-Hornet that was knock off gun rack went down 7 feet landed on cement floor on the scope , rifle stock was busted almost in half , had to take rifle to gunsmith for him to reset and glue stock. scope does have some dings and marks but still held zero. i now have 4 of these 1-6 x24 Burris scopes great durable scope . Exactly. Why isnt hardly anyone building a good optic that fits the bill? Dont know why anyone wants these ungodly heavy pile of chit

I have a VXIII 1.5-5 on my 375 in Talley QD rings. Also have a 1.5-6 Kahles with illuminated reticle and a 2.5-10 Bushnell Elite 4500 in Talley rings AND a Talley peep. IHMO with a grand total of 2 safaris to my credit, the 1.5-6 Kahles would have covered all of the bases with maybe one of the other scopes along for a spare. The 1.5 power has been fine for close work like finishing DG and I have shot to a little over 300 yards with it on PG at the higher power. Any reliable scope in that range should serve you well with a spare possibly complementary scope in QD rings as a backup.

I have a 1X4 S&B on my 458Win and a 1X8 LPVO Tract Toric on my 416 Remington

I rather like the 1-6x HD Mil/Mil Lit Bitches and have quite a few. Hint.





The Reupold 2.5x is a pile of fhuqking schit. Hint.

The Burris 1.5-6x's wouldn't track,repeat or hold zero on my 18lb+ Vudoo. Hint.

I have a Trijicon 1-6x24 with the green triangle reticle on my Model 70 in 416 Remington. Worked great on plains game plus Cape Buffalo.

The reticle works in every light condtion from bright sun light to star light.

I think it's a perfect big bore scope,especially for dangerous game on 1x.

Had no trouble on a charging cape buffalo.

S&B Exos 1-8x24. Perfect for hard recoiling rifles, especially for those that can reach out a little further like the 416 can. Illuminated reticle is nice when holding against a jet black Buffalo.
