An large irrigation canal broke above the town of Fernley NV at 4:30 a.m. today and flooded 4,000 folks out of their homes. The water came close enough to him that it flooded over his fish pond, but didn't get to the house. Now everything will freeze over tonight.
When something breaks, nothing stops the water as it runs across the desert land with sparse vegitation. It appears that a gopher hole was the cause. The same thing happened 10 years ago at about the same place; there were few homes there then, however. It was mostly farmland.

Thanks to all.  I sure feel for those folks who got wet. The area isn't a Federal Flood Plane, and no flood insurance was available to them. Homeowners Insurance won't cover anything, even additional living expense. I have the unenviable task of telling people this every few weeks.

Glad your son is okay. We live next to Cirby creek and I thought it was going to flood yesterday but we stayed dry again. 10 years ago it flooded badly and Billy Clinton was a block from my place "consoling" people. We stayed away.......  Bear

Glad all are ok, read about the story earlier today. Seems that the storm brought a big snowfall to the Sierra Mtns. News reports states that it's closed all the passes between NV & CA.

If it's an irrigation ditch, wouldn't the irrigation company have the liability for the flood? FWIW, Dutch. It will involve attorneys and years of litigation. Meanwhile, 4,000 folks don't have homes.  I was a water user from the Truckee Canal, the one that broke, and dealing with my own water district was the cause of my ulcers and many stress chest pains, to say the least. They will blame a rodent and dig their heels in.

They will blame a rodent and dig their heels in. Been there, done that. Had a canal company kill about 100 grand worth of fish when they were gassing the ditches. "Who, us?" Never saw a dime, either. FWIW, Dutch.
