They have always sought a return to the historical norm, which means a tiny group of super wealthy and privileged elites, and the remainder of humanity in poverty and subjugation. They use many tools to bring us ever closer to this norm, one of which is collectivism, which destroys economies and individual initiative. Another is shutting down mass food production (farms, ranches, and such) so that all but the very wealthy struggle to maintain an adequate diet.

You haven't been paying attention. The powers at be (not the U.S. government) are working towards a post industrial society. Lowering the population by billions. To do that they need control. In order to usher in means of control you need cataclysmic change, and a "free" country leading the world makes that difficult.
