So I have a 24 yo in the basement. Any suggestions on inspiring the lad to move on?

Flame on, I agree that I deserve it on this one.

With out context it's hard to give sound advise.

Is he providing value to the family, working on the ranch, paying rent, working on a valuable degree or trade, or just living idle on your dime?

My neighbor had his 31yo son want to move back in with him. He said sure, the rent is $1,600 a month with first month in advance. Utilities, food, and cable are extra.

Shut that nonsense down PDQ.

That is a tough deal. Mothers can be especially tolerant.

Maybe do away with cable, internet, and the routers for a couple months.

Or, an attractive girlfriend with her own place.

If one wants real theater, let him move back in and bring the girlfriend along. Endured that once, and I was close to moving out myself.

Good luck, as such is becoming the norm more and more often,

As long as you're damn sure you didn't screw him up and cause this issue, I suppose letting him try out the world on his own wouldn't be a bad idea lol

Sounds like a job for a young Marine to handle.

Tell him this: Since you are 1/3 of the household, it is only fair that you contribute 1/3 of the expenses. Here's a list of your share of the mortgage, insurance, utilities, food, and taxes. You can pick the day of the month you'd like to pay.

It might still be cheaper than moving out, but don't tell him that before he does.

Good advice. You could always resort to parenting. Does the young fellow have a father that can teach him how to be a man?

How to handle this particular situation depends on a bunch of factors; none of which we know.

Convince him to Join the Army, go to Ranger School, and he can play REAL Live games.

Announce that you are moving to a small apartment about 3 months from now, and that there isn't space for him. That gives him a deadline, and he will have to find a job, find an apartment, and make his own arrangements. Make a big show of it, start packing boxes, but once he's out, change the locks and announce that you've changed your mind.

Or just rent a storage unit, move all his stuff into it, and give him the key to the storage unit.

Shut the power off to all outlets in the basement....

Or hardwire a coin operated power/charging station....

Turn off the heat..

Change the locks..

Don't feed him..

sorry, but not enough info.

But with the 'hints' that 'you deserve' it and he plays games....

I'm guessing, since you asked, that it hasn't gotten bad enough yet..... for you!

Wait a while, and again, I'll bet that when it gets to 'enough' you'll take the action that works....

YMMV of course.
