Argh.

Scored a gloss Vari X ii c 3-9X, no ring marks.
Put it on my 2017 #1 A.

Looked a little big so removed it. Yup, light ring marks up front where bottom of ring was.

Yeah, shoulda uses some tape in bottom of ring, but the top/bottom gap when torqued proper, was big.

Not bad ring mark, but pizzed me off as there was none before.

Am thinking the #1A will get a 1.5-5x and Warnes. May not need an offset at rear.
The B in .22 K Hornet will get an EGW base and Burris Zee rings.

Now to find a non CDS 1.5-5x.

I love my no.1’s, but getting a scope mounted right is a pita. I naturally shoot with my head back, neck straight, and am always crawling the stock with them. Have 3 set up with offset rear rings, ok but looks awkward. If Bill had of put the rear ring on the receiver where the no.1 roll mark is, my life would be SO much easier 🫤

I've tried Warne rings, they're okay...but if you need more rearward movement on the scope you are stuck with offsets.

I typically end up using a standard ring up front and an offset on the rear. And I have pretty much resigned myself to lapping them (and cold bluing) to get proper alignment, no pinch and good surface area contact with the scope tube.

The inside edge where the ring halves meet is usually the worst spot and the reason for so much of the horizontal pinch marks left on scope tubes. I usually spend some time filing these areas and dry fitting it to my intended scope before starting the lapping process.

It's a little time consuming, but I'm naturally a tinkerer so I don't mind. The Wheeler kit isn't too much of an investment either, especially when compared to another rifle or scope, and I have done several rifles worth of rings with it. The finished product you get is very nice, and I believe it benefits the scopes...not just eliminating ring marks either.

My two cents worth...

I too dress the points of the ring halves.

Think the top halves actually go past center, so theres a bit of snap over.

My Hornet will get the EGW base and Zee rings ( known good ).

My #1's wear Leupold rings. I have since swapped the scope shown and zero issues with ring marks. I do lap all of my rings, these Leupolds rings/receiver cuts were pretty straight. I'll soon be scoping a recently acquired 25-06 #1 using the same rings.

I dunno what I'm gonna do. Got plenty of time before deer season.
May keep the old gloss 3-9X for a .22rf or just get rid of it.
Hell I haven't even tried the scope to see if it works LOL

Ideally proly a long tube 2-7X Leupold.
Or a last Vari XIII 1.5-5X.

See what I come across.
The 3-9X looked "big" on the #1A anyway.

The above is a 1A though with a 25" barrel. Didn't like the tall turret on the 3.5-10X and knew better.

My #1A has a 22" bbl so needs a smaller scope to look right (to me anyway).
Leupold sent me new gloss caps that fit my old Vari X iic but they are taller than the originals (which were scuffed a bit).
Even that looked wrong to me LOL

That scope has a very long eye relief. I'm surprised the scope is so far back. To each their own, but I generally use a scope with a shorter eye relief, so it fits in the rings of the #1 better/more centered. I get by with something like a Burris FFII or Zeiss. YMMV, I guess..
