Hey guys, new to the campfire and would appreciate help with selection of a hand gun, I'm told it is a good brand, Sig/Sauer model p-239 comes with two barrels, 40cal, and 357sig. Any and all comments are welcome.

Look at the P-229 before you commit. You will not be sorry with a Sig.

The 239 has a relatively small grip. That bothers some folks, others don't care. It's also a single stack, I believe 8 shot magazine (that's for a 9mm, not sure what those cals are). That bothers some folks, others don't care. It's a fine weapon, like most any Sig. I have only shot a 9mm, those two cals could be a little snappy, but someone else will have to chime in on that.

I'm fond of my P245 as a concealed carry weapon. It's a bit short on capacity but I can carry a 228 Mag for a reload and I don't expect to be in a prolonged gunfight.
I fell more secure packing it with one in the chamber than I do with a 1911.
The trigger could be better, but the DA/SA option is nice.

Love the Sig, just don't care for the single stack magazine on that particular model. But it is a fine handgun, most Sig's are!

I have never owned a Sig - but I have shot a Sig P-226 frequently.
Sigs are 'top-of-the-line', and have a reputation for EXCELLENCE.

The "Personal-Size" (in Sig terms) Model P-239 is very popular as a 'concealed-carry' and is considered to be very accurate for a small pistol.

The P-239 is slimmer than other Sigs as it has the single-stack magazine. [8 rnds. for 9 mm] [7 rnds. for .357 Sig. & .40 S&W].

Technically the P-239 is very similar to the P-228 which has a dual-stack magazine for 12 rnds.

Personally, I much appreciate the single-stack magazine and slimmer grip. I own a vintage Beretta 92-SB compact M, 9mm pistol- which also has a single-stack mag. and slim grip. I shoot that pistol with more consistent accuracy- than most all my other auto-pistols which are double stack mag'd. I guess it's all in how well a pistol fits one's hand.

If you want this pistol more as a "self-defense" piece the 2 larger calibers ARE a positive option, but also the 9mm WILL more than suffice.

If you want to shoot this smaller gun a lot- the 9mm ammunition is sure a lot less expensive- as well as being much more comfortable, as regards RECOIL.

If this is your 'first' handgun, the P-239 IS a good choice, but I would sure check-out the other (and larger) Sigs already mentioned here as well.

I think you meant to say a "P220" mag.

Although the Sig 239 is of a configuration I don't care for personally, I regard them as an excellent rendition of the design. As a plus, If you decide you don't like it, resale on the Sigs seems to be as high as anything since they are (understandably) quite popular.

i've shot the 226 in 9mm and it was fine shooter thinking the same direction as you for concealment purpose with the 357 sig

I mostly shoot and carry a Sig 226 9mm these days, and I consider Sig to be top of the line in all respects.

The 239 is perhaps the very best of the small autos, and it's not only a safe gun, but it's reliable, accurate, sturdy, won't bite the hand that feeds it, and it has excellent sights that you can really see. It's also very accurate, and it's chambered for some serious cartridges, rather than something on the questionable side like the 380 ACP.............

I am using a P229R DAK as a duty pistol, and I voted with my wallet, as we buy our own at my big-city police job. (We have a choice of several approved DA .40's made by S&W, Beretta, SIG, Glunck, and Springfield.) I switched from a Glunck to the P229 in 2004, when the DAK trigger became available; the Glunck was a temporary quickie solution after I had to stop using 1911s for duty in 2002. This P229 is the best duty pistol, overall, I have carried in 24 years of wearing a badge, and I have tried quite a few.
