What is the tallest tale you have ever heard attributed to a cartridge or firearm?
By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

Counter monkey told a guy looking for a gun to go moose hunting
"This here is a 7-08 Remington. It's a 7mm Remington Magnum necked down to 308 and will knock a moose on its ass at 1000 yards"
That was a mom-pop type place in the late 80's or early 90's.

A dumbdick at Bass Pro told me they had taken in a Marlin lever gun in 35mm. Said his dad and uncle used one just like it for deer all the time.

Let's see.
On a trip to Texas a few years ago, the "guide" told myself and another that the .243 Winchester was originally used for military sniping.
Same guy also told us that he shot his Ruger American with Burris Fullfield out to 600 or 800 ( the exact distance I cannot recall) and it was only off by "thiiiisss muuuch" (holding his thumb and forefinger roughly an inch apart) whatever that means.

A .45 ACP bullet is so powerful that if you shoot a gook in the thumb it will knock him right out of his shoes.

What is the tallest tale you have ever heard attributed to a cartridge or firearm? I worked the gun counter at our local well know LGS...how much bandwidth do we have to use here? Right off the top of my head: Guy has an '86 Winchester in 45-70 which he claims will shoot a four inch group at 1100 yards. ( Why not the typical 1000 yards...I didnt bother to ask...) My pard, looking to string the guy says " Are you shooting black powder in it?" Dude says" Nope, I'm using some of that new white powder...." Me being me, I couldn't pass it up..." Yeah we know what you are putting up your nose, but what are you putting in the gun?" I got a million of them....
"...the left considers you vermin, and they'll kill you given the chance..." Bristoe

I've heard about many more 1/4 moa rifles than I've ever seen in action.
At gun counters and elsewhere I've heard variations of the "a 270 or 7 mag (or the like) isn't good up close because the bullet doesn't have time to expand" bullshit.

OK, here's another...
Guy comes in bragging that he has A Ruger #1 in ( So help me God...) a ".300 H&H Weatherby Magnum Improved" that he regularly kills coyotes at 900 yards with.
I asked him if he couldn't cram a few more adjectives into the caliber of that gun, and it went right over his head....as I'm sure most things do.

Buddy and I were getting some ammo to break in his new .45/70 guide gun. Another customer was there and said that his brother had a 45/70 and it blew a deer in half.

An acquaintance told me his Creedmore doesn't get up to speed until it hit 300 yards. Just kept going faster and faster.
Amazing technology.

I’ve heard a lot of “the bullet is still rising” at whatever arbitrary distance the bullshittter spouts off with.

One that sticks out in my mind is the guy who declared that he knew his 204 was travelling 4000 fps, "because of the sound it made." I just nodded and changed the subject. Must take a very discerning ear to know the difference between 3500 fps and 4000 fps by hearing the muzzle report!

That a 270 can be fired from a 280 because it's "smaller" but a 280 can't be fired from a 270. This conversation had Darwin Award written all over it so I just walked away rather than trying to explain...

“Want to see a moose drop? My buddy has a 358 Weatherley and it will drop anything no matter where he hits em”.
Another time I walked up on a guy glassing wayyyy down into a really steep ravine. He pointed out a bear trail that was visible through the glass and said if you sit here long enough a bear will walk that trail down there. I remarked that it was a long shot to the trail down there. “Not with a Weatherby” was his reply. 👍
Like Ingwe and others who put in time behind the gun counter I have a thousand others but these two came immediately to mind.

Actually it is hard to beat the 'campfire forums for tall tales.
The one that sticks in my mind the most occurred during one of the Leupold bashing sessions - the poster said that he had 26 bad Leupolds in a row.
Really? If anyone had that many bad anythings in a row and they kept on buying the product - that is a special kind of stupid. And then to post about like it was an accomplishment of some sort goes beyond "special".

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.
24hourcampfire.com - The site where there is a problem for every solution.

Barracks bs session in the Navy, kid saying a guy he used to work for got 4000 fps from a .300 Weatherby with 180 grain bullets. When I expressed skepticism he started in about the special barrel steels Weatherby uses…
Counter monkey at the original Dick’s store showing a potential customer a No. 1 Ruger in .25-06: This is a great rifle for road hunting. You can kill a deer as far away as you can see them.
Hit a man anywhere with a .45 it will knock him off his feet.
Hit a man in the shoulder with a .45 it will spin him around so fast it will snap his neck.
