Echos my thoughts. That sagittal crest and tooth pattern doesn’t resemble any canine skull I have ever seen, and I have see a LOT of them of various species, ages and sizes.

I don’t know squat about possums….can one have a 7 inch long skull?

In the original post when the skull is upside down you can see the semi-circle where the front teeth were. Same as the known possum skull.

Canine front teeth are not that numerous, and are set closer to the fangs.

I tend to agree there.

Although you found the skull and leg bone together, so assuming they are both from the same animal is not a bad assumption and most likely, there is the possibility they are not from the same animal. Could be that some scavenger brought the bones of two different animals to the same spot to feed on them.

I thought maybe badger or coon but both of those have larger brain cavities than this one.

Have to correct some bad info.

Skull length: 5-3/4”
Leg bone: 3-1/2”

Apologies to all for misleading your thoughts. I’m about 99% certain it’s a possum. Will endeavor to not let one of them bite me. 🤪

Possum makes a lot of sense- - - - -long on teeth and short on brain. Come to think of it- - - - -a democrat sort of meets the same criteria!

Actually, there are 26 teeth or sockets in the original photo of the upside down skull. The skulls I have here are 26 up and 24 down.

So my eyes didn't deceive me, there are 6 sockets around the front side of the jaw in front of the canine. I was thinking I was miscounting or not seeing correctly.

Not having a lower jaw visible, and me not knowing they only have 24 lower teeth I was getting a mite confused, because 13x2x2=52, not 50 which is the number possums have.

Makes a lot of sense now.

I was mostly going on the shape and noted length. The tooth description/count seems to say Possumbility.

Do a search for “possum skull” …..high sagital ridge and 50 teeth are identifying characteristics.
