What year would a model 70 possibly come with no rear sight but a front sight? Guess it could have had a rear peep sight but found it odd to not even have a dovetail.

Sounds like a custom barrel to me.

‘Omit Rear Sight Seat’ was a Special Order option available on ALL Winchester rifles from day one in the black powder/lever action days. There is no specific reference to the Model 70, but it was one of the list of options in the general Winchester Catalog(s) under the title ‘Extras for Winchester Rifles’ (to include the M70 production run from 1936 -1963). Such a M70 would also require a stock not inlet for the rear sight boss, barrel bedding screw and depending upon era possibly an inlet for Lyman receiver sight.
There is a pic of a pre-war M70 Carbine with this feature in the “No one got a Model 70 for Christmas Thread” that appeared in this forum back in early Jan.

So many questions so easily answered with a picture or two.

If you aren’t able, I am happy to post them for you; send me a PM.

I think pocono answered the question pretty well, but I was also thinking we needed a picture or 2. A lot of threads would be much better in that regard. They can use postimage like you do, or Imgur, as I do. Pretty simple really.

Have a 1939 375 that has a front site with no dovetail and no holes drilled for a rear sight anywhere in the barrel. Peep sight only.

Way more common on 375's. I thought the sightless rear option still had the boss just no dovetail slot cut?

You can see the screw holes from where the rear sight was removed.

Pretty obvious. And you were definitely right about pictures solving it right off the bat. Too bad it didn't start off with a pic or 2. The 375H&H is not like a typical pre 64 model 70, as they don't have the dogknot sight boss.

I also have to reiterate that pocono was right, given the info that he was given.
