We took my best friend on his last ride today. This is his favorite tractor a John Deere 4450. We took him the last 2 miles from the fire hall to the cemetery on a flat bed trailer. Didn't want to be a burden on his family anymore, so he did himself in on Tuesday.

RIP That’s an awfully good working man’s choice for a last ride.

Relieving his family of the burden is honorable to some.
Godspeed nimblehunter's friend.

Sounds like died and lived on his own terms. Nice way to pay your respects. Since Covid I’ve seen too many folks not get the send off they deserved, the dead should be honored.

You have my sympathy for your loss, and prayers for his family. I love the tractor! Three weeks ago, we took my older brother Dave. We used his ton Dodge dually , and hauled him around the Ridge one last time before we went to the cemetery. Reon

Sorry about your friend. Condolences to the family and friends. I remember being surprised to learn in emt school that elderly men are the highest statistic for suicide, mostly for the same reason as your friend. I always figured it would have been teenagers.

I've known quite a few people who made that decision. Some I understand, some I don't. Sorry for the loss of your friend. Great send-off though.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Condolences nimblehunter, losing a best friend is really tough. You know what they say about friends and family, you can't pick your family but you can pick your friends. And "best friend" is quite a statement. Good on you for giving your best friend a proper send-off. that's what is called "doing the right thing" I hesitate to bring this up on this thread and this is in no way a comment on nimblehunter's best friend because I know nothing of the circumstances. But I've thought the same thing Mannlicher said above. Alzheimer's seems to run in the family and there's no way I want to be a burden, or spend my kid's inheritance for a spot in a warehouse for dementia patients. So I've thought about ending it if I get the diagnosis, before it's too late and I lose the capacity to act. But just recently a good friend at work had his father-in-law take his life. He had multiple medical issues including memory loss, but it was totally unexpected and the family was devastated. He chose to end it with a bullet so that no doubt had something to do with it the family's devastation. My friend told me to consider that if I ever got to that point. It sounds like nimblehunter's friend's situation was totally different and friends and family were prepared, what with the send-off. Just something for the rest of us to think about.
A wise man is frequently humbled.
