I asked this in the optics forum but I thought I'd try here as well. I picked up a LH Ed Brown 416 Rem that needs a scope. This will primarily used in Africa for dg and pg. I want an illuminated reticle and it will also be suppressed. Do I mess with qd mounts? Any input is appreciated.

So, what's your thinking about qd mounts? Are you thinking a scope that does double duty for dg & pg with a backup scope in case the mounted scope pukes in the field?
It's you and the bullet, and all the rest is secondary.

I’ve got an older NF2.5-10x24 with PTL for my 458WM. Illuminated. Will be in Talley QD mounts. It’s a Mod 70 Classic Safari Express.

QD mounts are always a plus. Even if you have a slick barrel or a suppressor that obscures the iron sights, always good to have a backup scope in same make of QD rings and pre-zeroed. Levers not required as long as you have the tool in your pocket for whatever the main mounting nut or screw requires.

Yes, Talley QD rings with levers, i used a 1.5-5 leupold to shoot plains game to 277 yards in Tanzania 2020, 400gr AFrames at 2400 fps from 400 H&H, your 416 Remington will boot 350 TSX to 2700 fps+ If you choose that bullet i'd glass up to 8 or 10X, flat shooter to 400 yards if need be.

When I went to Zim this last year I used Alaskan arms qd rings and had two scopes set up, just in case. Also this gives you the option to remove scope entirely if you happen to be hunting elephants close up! ;?)

The gun does have iron sights. I figured if the can blocks the sights, I'd just take it off since it'll be close quarter shooting. The thinking on qd mounts is a backup scope if things go pear shaped wether in transit or during the hunt. Since I'm a lefty, I'd like to use my gun especially in dg situations. I've only been over twice but those 2 camps didn't have lefty guns. I was a righty then so it didn't matter. Lost my right eye in Dec of 2020.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I have a Leupold 1.5-5x on my 500 Jeffery and love it. Plenty of eye relief, good in the brush and 5x is good enough for me as far as I would feel good about shooting it. I have it in steel Talley QR mounts, I have good iron sights on the rifle as well. Scope has held up well with over 400 full power rounds about 100 of those using a lead sled.

Chuck
