Absolutely no question to me, I'd go with a Leupold 3-9 with the LR dotz in it.

I have several different scopes, Sightron SII, Burris FFII, Leupold VXIII, Nikon Monarch, Bausch & Lomb Elite (what the current 4200 elite is now) and a Zeiss Conquest. To my old eyes, the Sightron is the best value for the money, but the Zeiss has the best glass. Only possible issue with Conquest is the rather large occular bell. I had to use taller rings to get the bolt to clear on a pre64 Model 70. Go with the Zeiss and don't look back. Cameraland and others can beat Cabelas on price.

Regarding the reticle options available. I recently got a 3-9x40 Conquest with a 4A reticle and had the opportunity to use it for the first time in a real hunting situation. I was very surprised at the ease at which I was able to acquire and track a seriously spooked buck running full speed across a slope about 60 yards in front of me.
I would not hesitate to recommend this reticle to anyone for use on a hunting gun. Easy to see in low light as well.

My opinion is based on a combination of first hand experiance and TONS of reading reviews. However, seeing that I have no experiance with the Conquest other than in the store take my opinion for what you want. I use Leupold Vari XXX's and Bushnell Elite 3200's. The Leupold has better glass and eye relief, and a better reputation for toughness. Leupold has an awesome warranty too. With that being said, my 3200's have served me well. Cheaper than the Leupolds, good optics, and I've never had one fail. A consensus of the many reviews and opinions will say that Leupolds are tougher than the Conquest's and have better eye relief, but the Conquests provide better images. IMHO I seriously doubt anyone would benefit from these "better images," and since I am a hunter first and foremost I will take tougher any day.

Ok I guess I will pile on, conquest!!! here is the best kept secret about the conquest line, and prolly one that not many realize, the conquest offers 18" of elevation with one turn of the knob, to some this is nothing, but to me that means I can run my 270win out to over 800 yards with that one turn, of course I had zeiss add on a target knob for me on mine. as the 3x9 does not come with them, this scope was instrumental in my 666 yard coyote kill a couple months ago

One nice thing about the conquest is that you don't have to be a expert to focus them!
The Elite 4200 3-9X40 is another nice scope and really nice for $250

The new VXII 3X9 is a great scope for the money and will save you $100 to put toward binoculars which is really where good money should be spent.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned for you to get the Burris Fulfield II, or Nikon Monarch they also have nice glass, But if it was my money I would still go with the Conquest.

RAH Here's the Zeiss' Sport Optics page. It wouldn't give a different web address for the reticles. The Z-Reticles 6,8,1000 and Varmint are different LR reticles. you can browse around their page to their Conquest or Diavari and get reticles options for each. http://www.zeiss.com/sportsCasey BTW, +1 for Zeiss Conquest
