In the early 1950s Savage began offering the 99 in 308 Winchester. Simultaneously the 300 Savage and 250 Savage were also offered. After Savage made the receiver change to accommodate the 308, were all 99 rifles made with the 308-length frame regardless of cartridge for which it was chambered?

the magic SN number is 900,000; above that, or a SN starting with a letter = has the updated/modified longer actions for all chambers. All 700K SNs in 1950s still have the shorter action.

Wasn't really the early 50's that the 308 came into play. Mid-50's, late 1955 to be exact.

They sold both the last 7xx,xxx old style receivers in 250 and 300 as well as the 9xx,xxx new receivers through a good part of 1956. Don't know if they had two manufacturing lines running, or if they just had 10,000 or so old style receivers to use up.

It’s amusing to me to see someone storm in here stating his opinion as fact and get absolutely shredded.

Anything below 900,000 = old style rec'r (250-3000, 300 Et al)
Anything above 900,000 = new style ( 308 Et al)
