I chopped mine from 24" to 18". I lost 125fps is all. Glad I did it.

I think 18” is a pretty good spot.

What length do you WANT? ( do you need compact or to stretch the range?) I’ve cut 270s back to 18” for suppressed use, and not regretted it or missed any perceived velocity loss. I moved a 7-08 to a buddy that I was going to chop and thread to 16-17”. Any 308, I’d chop 16” in a heartbeat. I don’t need to shoot 500 yards, but mostly under 300. More than enough barrel at 16-18 for most stuff, and kids can handle the recoil and still hearing safe.

I cut mine to 20" and use a 7" TB. Haven't noticed loss of velocity.

Mine is at the gunsmith now being cut to 16.5”. I’ll load 118 gr. Hammer HHT’s. The Hammer bullets tend to run a little faster so I’m not worried about FPS loss. Plus it’ll be a 300 yards and in gun.

Depends on how long your suppressor is too. I had my kids’s 7mm08 cut to 16” since my first suppressor was ~8” long. I’ve gone longer barrels on some others since I’ve got a K can now

18" is probably a safe middle ground if you have a reasonable length can. 16" will probably realistically do anything you need if you're mostly shooting at normal hunting ranges. I had my 300 WSM cut to 18", my .30-06 cut to 18.5" and just had my 7mm PRC barrel made at 19". Earlier on I had a 6.5 CM Montana cut to 20", wish I had gone 17"- 18" though, 20" is a bit longer than what I like for a svelte rifle with a can.

I shoot 6.5CM/7mm-08/.308 in barrels measuring 16, 16.5, 17, and 18 inches. Anywhere in there is fine by me with a typical 7” can.

19.5 inches on my Forbes and I’m running the new Scythe TI on it and loving it. That can with direct threads adds less than 6 inches to the over all length

My brother didn’t trim his Tikka at all. Not an issue.

How do you plan on hunting? If you're mainly in a box or hub blind cut it at least to 18". If not leave it as long as you want. I run 16-20" barrels with my Omega 300.

18” is my vote as well. It will safely get 150’s with newer powders to 2700 fps + which is plenty fast for anything a 7mm-08 should be used for.

I have a 8" suppressor so after reading the replies with the 7mm-08 I am now thinking 17".

Where I now hunt 200 yards is a long shot, if I buy a 270" I would think 18".

My 240WbyMag - Mark V Weathermark LT has a 24" barrel instead of cutting it down I am thinking of getting a 6mm creedmoor and cut that around 17"..

My 7-08 Ackley is 17”. I’ve shot steel to 1200 yards with it and 162 ELDX. Shot a blackbuck at 320 last weekend and dropped it. It killed a cow elk the day before. Never wished it had a longer barrel.

My fieldcraft is 18.5". I still get 2550fps with 180g eldms. I don't usually go less than 17" it leaves me a little room to recrown or rethread if needed.

I have a 17" criterion remage 6.5 Creedmoor that's new for sale right now if someone needs a shorty. I went ahead and bought bought a sig cross instead of going remage.
