Ok. While in the process of purchasing something, I was offered a nice looking sporterized 1932 Mexican Mauser in 243 Winchester for a very attractive price as part of a package. However, it's not where I can put my hands on it. But is is a nice looking gun, with a nice figured stock and some thining of the blueing from wear. If it was in 7x57 I'd pull the trigger no questions. But with this being a higher pressure cartridge I'm more cautious since you can tell I'm still learning about Mausers. I can tell it was a favorite rifle from the apparent, but not abused, wear from the pictures. It's already had the safety switched and other custom touches.

So I'm going to ask some elementary questions.

I've been trying to research this model and finding conflicting info Online. Would this be what is considered a 1910 model model large ring 98? For I think the 1935 Mexican Mauser has the 1903/Mauser looking hybrid look and was considered fine for 30-06 in the past. I read conflicting opinions on if the 1926-34 Mexican Mausers are ok with higher pressure. Although this one looks to have handled it fine. What factory would have made the original rifle?

And can anyone suggest a good reference book on military Mausers that would help me understand some of my questions?

1910 and 1936 are both small-ring. AFAIK neither can fit an -06 without work.

The 1936 had the 1903 Springfield type cocking knob. The pictured rifle does not.

I agree, it is a pretty stock on the 243. Even though I don't "need" it, I'm finding it hard to pass on. I was trying to trim out some excess rifles, but now I keep trying to talk myself out of it.

Here is a picture of the custom 1936 model I'm purchasing from him. It was fully upgraded at some point in the past. Event the trigger guard was modified, safety, new 308 barrel, etc.

Plumbum is correct, the 1910 and the 1936 are both small ring 3 locking lug designs, they can be used for light hunting rigs and are great, I have one in 308. I’ve sold I think 3 more actions that I still kick myself in the butt for doing. That .243 would be a great purchase and from everything I’ve read and seen will handle that cartridge. I do know some of them have a little gas vent on the side, some people don’t like the way that looks and prefer the actions that don’t have it I guess for aesthetic purposes. I saw one in 22-250 one time and it went for way higher than I wanted to pay for it. Another one that I’d like to add to the collection is the 1924 Mexican mauser which is a large ring but im not sure if it’s a standard or intermediate action. I’ll check my books and see if I have any references.

A reputable gunsmith did not hesitate to fit a .308 barrel to my 1910 Mexican 98 action.

IIRC Jack O'Connor mentioned Mexican small ring actions as good for sporterizing.

IIRC 1924 Mexican 98s were FN manufactured.

I have a 7x57 Mauser that looks almost Identical to that, except Its an 1895 Chilean Mauser SR action.
The Late Gunsmith Steve Bowers who specialized in Custom Mausers preferred the Mexican Mauser actions due to being very strong.

I thought it was but I wasn’t 100% sure, I have a Serbian 1924 that I rebarreled to 25-06 and the round just fit in the magazine box. It’s been cerakoted and is waiting for me to find a stock. It is also an intermediate and was my first experience with that odd length. Another I have is a 1909 Peruvian and it is set up for .243 love that rifle. It’s an old school setup varmint rifle with the Bausch and Lomb scope and mounts.

Here is the picture I have from the owner of the left side of the 243 Chambered rifle. If you want one of the 308, I'll see what I can do. I don't expect to have the 308 for another week or so.

txtrout yes that helps ; both are limited by length as to cartridge they can use. like i said I have a 6-284 on this action I use 240 weatherby load information to load for it . I would feel safe firing ether of the ones your looking at
for M98 action information go to THE ACCURATE RELOADING.COM FORUMS then gunsmithing then reference material there is a list of M98 actions after you read this about 4x or more it will be clearer

I have a 1910 Mexican built into a .257 Ackley Improved. Love the rifle though it’s no lightweight. It’s a tack driver and runs both 115 grain Ballistic Tips and 75 grain V-Maxes equally well. It will handle that .243 with zero problems.

Jfk69, that 257AI sounds like a neat rifle.

I've always wanted a "Bob", but my practical side has limited me. Well, perhaps not. I have way more hunting rifles than I'll ever need. The 243 kind of falls into that area for me. I don't hunt Varmints,.and when it comes to deer, I have a 7-08, that with 120 grain bullet, is perfect for TX. So the 243 I have doesn't get used. I guess if I was practical, I'd just have a 30+06 and a 6.5cm.

However, hard to pass up a great deal.

Crappy pic, but this little Mexican turned into a nice little 7x57. Unfortunately the pic was taken before bluing and stock finishing. I currently have two Mexicans in progress; one in 7x57 the other in 6,5x55.





This one became a real nice little .257 Bob.
